Energy experts speaking at a virtual Reliable Grid Project media briefing Wednesday said renewable power sources are needed to keep up with Texas' growing demand for electricity.

The U.S. Department of Energy recently announced it will put $360 million toward a project to create a new link between the Texas power grid, which operates independently from its neighbors, and other grids in the Southeast.

The Texas power grid is facing issues with its capacity and reliability due to government policies. The Department of Energy's imposition of arbitrary emissions limits and subsidies for renewable energy sources are the main culprits behind the instability of the grid. The policies need to be reformed, and the significance of fossil fuels in ensuring grid security should be recognized.

@dangillmor At what point should a government seize control of private resources? Like a #usstatedepartment take over of #Starlink in wartime. Or the #Texasgrid turn off the power to #Texas #bitcoin miners during a #heatwave (or permanently as polluters). What's the opposite of #privatize again?

Per @Chron : While ERCOT begged Texans to conserve power, Texas paid $31 million to Riot, a bitcoin miner, to cut its energy use.
In Texas, #Bitcoin mining electricity usage est? 33 gigawatts/yr
All Houston households usage est ? - 6 GW/yr

Wonderful. ERCOT is *again* asking Texans to voluntarily conserve power due to supply not meeting grid demands. This is the 6th day in the past week. Why? Lower than normal winds (a huge chunk of grid power in Texas is from wind) and "unexpected thermal generation outages". Local news reports the outages are coal and natural gas, reducing the power output by 11 gigawatts. Yuck.
If it reaches rolling blackouts I'll be fine with my solar and batteries, but still. Most of my neighbors, family, and friends don't have these options.

I think the Texas grid is a disaster, but I also want to be clear, that what happened in #Austin’s ice #storm a weeks ago, was not caused by the #TexasGrid, but rather awful leadership over the last 15 years or so along with complaints from richer city residents, in rich, white neighborhoods. I’m glad this is being covered by our local NPR affiliate. Here’s more about what happened. https://www.npr.org/2023/02/05/1154582020/ice-laden-trees-have-caused-widespread-power-outages-in-austin-texas
