I recently read "Lunar New Year Love Story" by Gene Luen Yang and LeUyen Pham. I'd picked it up as a good February read and then was quite surprised by all its twists and turns. What surprised me most, though, was how #Catholicism was depicted. I don't think I've ever seen such a realistic, well-rounded portrayal in fiction. I know people like all of these. I feel like the creators knew their material intimately. Very impressed.

Hardly any updates in the last week. We are celebrating the start of a Lunar New Year, the Year of the Horse.
This time around I was invited to join my girlfriend's family in Buon Ma Thuot for the celebrations. They already knew me from last year's coffee festival (which we visited) and were very excited to have me over. As was I, Tet in the countryside is really something different. It was an inspiring week, with lots of family, friends and fun. And no computers (hardly any), not even real attention for the phone.
Most importantly I got a good couple of days with Tuyet's kids, so i am happy to report back I've doubled the number of my kids from 2 to 4 in a week's time. Howzat!

A couple of days in the countryside of Vietnam has a refreshing effect on screentime. Family, friends, eating all the time and sufficient boredom.
I'm seriously considering winding down to this rhythm. Can assure you all our digi-stuff is essentially totally unimportant. No laptops seen here, and 8 year old smartphones are sufficient to do anything.

This was famously a big deal in the #VietnamWar. The #TetOffensive was planned for the day after #Tet, Vietnamese traditional New Year.

But while south Vietnam was still in the same time zone as #China, UTC+8, North Vietnam had switched to UTC+7 to express independence.

That year, the new moon fell within half an hour of local midnight, which meant that Tet fell 1 day earlier in the North than the South, and so Northern forces attacked the south a day earlier than expected.
