We start the year with #HopeThe Specials, “We Sell Hope” from “Encore” (2019)
The Specials were the cornerstone of UK second-wave #ska, with mastermind Jerry Dammers founding 2Tone Records.
They came together in the late 70s and splintered in the early 80s, coming back together in a variety of permutations with members of their 2Tone label mates and others, but came closest to a true reunion after reuniting for a 30th Anniversary tour in 2009, with Terry Hall back on vocals, albeit sans Dammers.The Specials always had a social conscience, being vocally anti-racist. My sense was they looked around in the late twenty-teens and saw they were needed, delivering their message via their first studio album of new material in many years (depending on how you define "they"). With Terry’s passing in 2022, it became their last.
The title of this track shows their sardonic wit had not dimmed, underlining the chorus giving a litany of Orwellian doublespeak. The down-stepping melody of the verses feels ominous, but by taking the tone of a warning, suggests hope to me; only where there’s hope would a warning matter, and indeed the verses turn sincere, using decidedly sweet vocals to give prescriptive measures for arresting our slide into dark times.

The Fun Boy Three, The Fun Boy Three, 1982 on Chrysalis
The Fun Boy Three (Terry Hall, Neville Staple, and Lynval Golding) were a spin-off / outgrowth of The Specials. This was their debut, self-titled album with guests Bananarama on four tracks, including a cover of “It Ain’t What You Do (It’s The Way That You Do it),”
Also features “The Lunatics (Have Taken Over The Asylum)” which I love. The album cover back side presents the credits like a movie poster for a film shot in glorious stereo FunboyScope: “Gasp, Wonder, and Thrill to the Sound of the 80s.”
There’s a great BBC documentary—2 Tone The Sound of Coventry—which features lots of interviews with Hall and Staples, though it is more focused on The Specials.
My copy—via A1 records in NYC—is an early 80s Terre Haute pressing which was sealed, with the original hype sticker.

The prompt is AsylumFun Boy Three, "The Lunatics (Have Taken Over the Asylum)" 1981
I always thought of #FunBoyThree as a side project by 3 members of second-wave #ska band The Specials, but in fact the formation of the group may have been part of #TheSpecials' breakup.
While The Specials used wit to address serious, topical subjects, Fun Boy Three burst onto the scene as off-kilter and downright wacky, from Terry Hall’s exaggerated coif to this single that announced their arrival. The song would be included on their debut eponymous album released the following year.
Perhaps in support of female empowerment, or maybe just to position themselves as a ‘boy band,’ the group associated with the all-female Go-Go's, #TerryHall cowriting “Our Lips Are Sealed" with the #GoGos' #JaneWiedlin, and later with #Bananarama, guesting prominently on each other’s releases.
But never mind all that - let’s have some lunacy.
