  1. I love how @adapalmer not just uses different quotation mark styles to mark different languages, but also when a character switches languages mid-conversation, the mismatched «opening and closing" quotation marks mark that as well

  3. I have finished reading Seven Surrenders by Ada Palmer. When I finished the first book in the series (darkfriend.social/@hybridhavoc) I said that it felt incomplete without this second one. Now that I have finished it I can say that these are really phenomenal books, especially for anybody that is into political intrigue and sci-fi.

It feels like a more proper stopping place, allowing me to move on and maybe come back to the series at a later date.

It is a world in which near-instantaneous travel from continent to continent is free to all. And it is a world in which, unknown to most, the entire social order is teetering on the edge of collapse.

Because even in utopia, humans will conspire. And also because something new has arisen: Bridger, the child who can bring inanimate objects to conscious life.

  5. I #AmReading Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer. Been on my TBR for a while now.

Mycroft Canner is a convict. For his crimes he is required, as is the custom of the 25th century, to wander the world being as useful as he can to all he meets. Carlyle Foster is a sensayer—a spiritual counselor in a world that has outlawed the public practice of religion, but which also knows that the inner lives of humans cannot be wished away.

  6. They aren't gender-neutral then, they just want to be and are lying to themselves if they believe they've already done it, and they do take steps towards changing that system in the end.

And while a lot has got to change in the Radch, I do hope they keep their system while acknowledging other cultures do things differently and loaning pronouns from other languages to accommodate them.

  7. It's interesting to compare with the Alliance from @adapalmer's "Terra Ignota" series here. They also are a nominally gender-neutral society using only one third-person pronoun ("they") and eschewing gendered names and clothes.

But there, it's a thing the society implemented but still chafes against: people do use gendered names and appearances, do gendered sexual play, and can be pushed towards a dominance of male leaders with not much effort.

  8. Still thinking about "A #PrayerForTheCrownShy" and its comfortable human society which has done so well for itself. It makes me think about how the humans in @sbdivya's #Meru get treated for "Ambition and Avarice Disorder" if they want beyond their comfortable lives, and how the Utopians in @adapalmer's #TerraIgnota whine about "complacency".

Here, we really might have a happy, complacent society. And even though I make so much fun of the Utopians, it somehow irks me.

    Huh.

  12. Just finished #TerraIgnota #book series by #AdaPalmer and I have to say I'm mind-blown.

Yes, the books are pretentious at times, but the world is so beautifully crafted, the characters seem human and there is no easy "good" or "bad" side in the conflict.

That's a good sci-fi written by a historian, where technology takes a second place to human culture, and approaches to life. For me - that was really refreshing.
