Harvesting and Tying with Zenmai
Jay Guarneri wrote a great article in the 2026 edition of Tenkara Angler about collecting zenmai from ferns and tying kebari with it. He inspired me to go out and collect some of my own zenmai this spring.

What is zenmai? My Best Streams calls it “cotton of flowering fern” and has this pop-over info box:
Flowerring Fern “Zenmai” sprouts about from April to June and those sprouts are covered with cotton. Zenmai is distributed in the Korean Peninsula, China, Taiwan and the Himalayas. The same kind of Zenmai is distributed worldwide except Australasia. There are Yamadori Zenmai / Cinnamon Fern (Osmunda cinnamomea), Yasha Zenmai (Osmunda lancea), Oni Zenmai (Osmunda claytoniana), Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis), besides Zenmai (Osmunda japonica). The cotton of zenmai is often used to the body of traditional tenkara fly. The people who lived in the mountain village spun the cotton of zenmai into thread and made the winter clothes in the old days because this material has performance of water proof. It can be said that it is a wisdom of the mountain village’s people. It is also well known that the sprouts dries and becomes food.

I finally found a patch of Cinnamon Ferns today near a brook and collected about a dubbing pack’s worth of zenmai.
I found the stuff fairly easy to dub with a little wax on my thread. Though as Jay pointed out when I was messaging him on Instagram, I was lucky to get some nice straight fibers, which makes dubbing easier.
I chose to tie futsu-style kebari in size 14 with orange thread and grizzly hackle.
I’ll probably tie some hen pheasant soft hackles next.
I also want to go out and collect some more. I collected from maybe 1/20th of the patch I found. Another bunch similar to what I collected today should do nicely.

Tied my first fly in a couple of months. That's a Gamakatsu S10-B in size 8. I really like this hook, but I struggle with the size 8 for some reason. Think I did it justice here, though. It's has got a natural "black" yarn body with a gold colored rib. The wing is deer hair. Tied it in hand (without a vise) using YLI 100 weight silk thread.
I caught one crappie on this fly and then promptly lost it in a tree. C'est la vie.

But I referred to a protein I work on as “Timeless,” and got a criticism that it should be "timeless." I insisted “Timeless” was the right way😉

I did not see a trout. The fish in the photo is a rosyside dace (a minnow). It ate a size 18 wet fly.

VERY excited about my new #tenkara rod. 82 grams for a 10-foot fly fishing rod, line, tippet, and fly. Another 60 grams for a case and a small pouch with spare tippet and flies. 142 grams; it's about the most #ultralight #fishing setup I think one could achieve short of going rodless.

I took my son for a walk to a local creek as he is recovering from his knee injury. While I was casting my tenkara line, he built a little fish trap in the flowing water and waited for me to catch some fish 😊
I felt a bit of pressure, but I managed to catch a few fallfish for him 😉

I've taken a little break from catching fish. I've been traveling for two of the last three weeks, and the bass were on their beds when I first left town. It's time to get back into the swing of things.
I want to go to Alabama next weekend to see the Cahaba Lilies and maybe catch a Cahaba Bass.
I want to get back up into Western NC, but I didn't have any fishing luck there this time last year.
I want to buy a heavier fly rod to fish for carp. I would put my paddle board onto Bull Sluice Reservoir to chase them. Might take a trip to the orvis store this afternoon for a 9 weight.

The bass are still busy spawning and sitting on their nests, but I was able to land one last night. My hollow deceiver looks skinny out of the water, but it has volume under water where the fibers aren't under tension.

I got a lot of refusals at a different lake last night, but they were ready to roll at Stone Mountain tonight. I've been trying out a sort of heavy deer hair bug. Fishing with a Tenkara, I am holding the fly on the surface of the water. The "too long" hook allows me to give it a lot of motion on the surface.

Looks like I really lost the tenkara mini. It must have slipped out of my fishing bag while I was putting things in and out. This is the third time I lost my tenkara rod, although I never lost my regular fly rod. A tenkara rod is easily to carry, but for me, it seems to also be easy to lose🤔

Harris (well, harisu) is the short line that attaches to the hook. Thinner than the line (michi-ito) that comes from the tip of the rod. So, it is same as the tippet that is used for tenkara.
