The idea that author-killer Peter Neal has time to sneak in a back entrance to the other murderer’s house, find an axe, kill the guy while somehow remaining out of sight of the young man he came with who has a clear view, quickly get back out to where he was in the yard and hit himself over the head with a rock — this, upon rewatching, almost breaks the movie.
