Last night, we rallied to protect Renee and her family from an illegal eviction at 2777 Kipling.
This kind of eviction abuse will become all-too-common under Bill 60. Tenant rights are under attack. But here’s how we can fight it: we need everybody to call the President of Q Residential at
416-843-6815 and demand Renee gets her home back! Spread the word and keep up the pressure, because if it can happen to one of us it can happen to any of us! #TOPoli #ONPoli #Toronto #Etobicoke #TenantUnion #TorontoTenantUnion #TenantPower #StrongerTogether -

This Sunday, February 15, the tenants' union is calling on people across the island to join their closest neighbourhood branch for a day of flyering, postering, stickering, and door-knocking.
We are starting to receive yet another wave of rent increases that for many of us spells further poverty, burnout, or eviction. We will not pay for the riches of landlords. Don't let them take the city while we sleep! We need every hand on deck to organize our neighbourhoods into mass fighting organizations for our self-defence and liberation.
Where and when to join us:
in #Hochelaga: tenant circle at 12 pm; postering and flyering meet-up at 2 pm at 1800 Letourneux
in #MileEnd / #Outremont: 1 pm at 5550 Parc (YMCA du Parc)
in the #PlateauMTL / downtown: 12 pm at 3516 Parc
in #CentreSudMTL: 3 pm at métro Frontenac
in #VerdunMTL: 2 pm at métro de l'Église
on the #LigneBleue: 12 pm at métro Parc -

On Wednesday, Sept 24, at 6 pm, at Cité-des-Hospitalières (251 avenue des Pins), our union will be launching SLAM School, a series of 12 classes spaced out over every 2 weeks. The classes are meant to capture a whole spectrum of analysis and tools we believe are necessary to build a combative and autonomous movement of tenants.
Don't miss our first class: an introduction to the union and its principles! It is meant for long-time and new members to consolidate the basic tools with which we approach our experiences as tenants. Future classes include a two-parter on "How to Organize Your Building"; a class on legal literacy, critical legal theory, housing law, and laws around direct action; two classes on the economics of real estate capitalism in #montreal a class on anti-authoritarian revolutions and lessons we can pull from them; a class on emergency preparedness; and more.

This Sunday, 15:00 (3 pm) to 17:00 (5 pm), our branch in Centre-Sud (#CentreSudMTL) will be hosting a bookclub at Café la Ligne Verte. We will be reading the recently released "Abolish Rent" by organizers and theorists from Los Angeles, Tracy Rosenthal and Leonardo Vilchis. No need to read in advance, we'll be reading together! The book, full of success stories from fights against landlords and catchy critiques of rent and landlordship, is quickly becoming essential reading in the union. Here is an excerpt from the book:
Rent is a wealth transfer from the poorest to the richest, the most vulnerable to the least, a monthly tribute that drives millions to debt, despair, and into the streets... If rent abolition is our aim, tenant power must be the means—built through everyday resistance in our buildings and on our blocks. This is the revolutionary project we need to make our housing, our cities, and the world our home.
We are, also, pleased to declare victory, as has been announced in the Montreal Gazette and CTV News, for those who haven't heard yet, in our struggle against the landlord, Mario St-Cyr. Our fight revolved around our boycott of Le Club. We reached a deal with the landlord: a 0% increase, and the tenants take on their own hydro bills as of October. No back payments for the past few months, and to top it all off, since there's no increase on the actual rent, future increases will be smaller.
This story has not just been about a fight with a landlord, but about a struggle against the Housing Tribunal and its protection of landlord profit. We knew that if this went to the Tribunal hearing, because of the landlord's $350,000 renovation costs this year, our members would be facing as much as a 15% increase or higher.
We have shown that through direct action—that is, by combative acts which do not rely on higher authorities—we can claim victories without leaving our fate in the hands of landlords, the government, or its tribunals. We put direct economic and social pressure on the landlord with our picket lines, and postering, and won. Even the landlord has, begrudgingly, acknowledged our success:
SLAM’s tactics of protesting outside his son’s café were “extraordinary” and “very dishonest,” Mario said. Still, “it’s because of the protest that I gave in,” he said.
This is all thanks to the autonomous initiative of our members & the work that comrades and the public put into supporting this campaign. Thank you to everyone who showed us solidarity.

At the end of the month, Firestorm Books and Asheville Democratic Socialists of America are teaming up to host "Abolish Rent" co-author Tracy Rosenthal for a virtual conversation! This free event caps off a tenant organizing book club facilitated by DSA and is open everyone.
"Abolish Rent: How Tenants Can End the Housing Crisis" is a deeply reported account of the resurgent tenant movement centering poor and working-class people who are fighting back, staying put, and remaking the city in the process. The authors take us to trilingual strategy meetings, raucous marches against gentrification, and daring eviction defenses where immigrants put their lives on the line.
Locals can join this author conversation in-person while remote participants should register for access at https://firestorm.coop/events/3431-abolish-rent-author-event.html. We hope you can make it!

SLAM has a union training coming up this Monday (March 24th), 6pm, at 251 avenue des Pins (the Cité-des-Hospitalières). It is for people already familiar with basic union principles which can be found in our constitution, see here: https://drive.usercontent.google.com/download?id=1mYUow0AD3dn42doxNhh9cm2Dhf4LBWvr&export=download
We'll be discussing how to get building meetings together, how to keep them on track, prepare agendas, do one-on-ones with neighbours, map out our potential sources of power and support, as well as how to plan pressure campaigns against our landlords.
We've been seeing a large number of people in our networks participating in the #RefuseTogether rent increase campaign, and see a high demand for support with building unionization & support to keep tenant councils alive once they've gotten going. We planned this training in our education committee's most recent meeting.

Our call for tenants to organize with their neighbours to refuse together is doing well this year. Already, many tenants in our union have organized meetings with their neighbours to plan collective refusals. Supporters of our union have been hand-delivered hundreds of pamphlets that have found themselves distributed to their neighbours' doors and mailboxes. We are already hearing some stories of tenants negotiating down their increases through this tactic.
Today and tomorrow, our neighbourhood chapters in Verdun on the one hand, and the Gay Village larger Centre-Sud area on the other, have planned workshops on how and why to organize collective refusals. Join them Tuesday, 6pm, at 4811 rue Verdun; or Wednesday, 6pm, at 1426 rue Beaudry.
Please let us know if you would like to come and would need childcare!
For people who can help boost these events online, it definitely helps us when members and supporters reshare these events. Please post our posters on other socials if you can.
Together we can beat our rent increases!

Our union is organizing a neighbourhood discussion in #Hochelaga on this year's #RentIncrease. The discussion will be in French, but we have a similar workshop in English coming up soon, organized by our Centre-Sud / Village tenant council (stay tuned).
The workshop in Hochelaga will be this Saturday, 12pm, at 1800 Letourneux. Childcare and food will be provided. All are welcome!
In this public meeting, we will be discussing how to start organizing with your neighbours, how to refuse increases together, and how to win negotiations with your landlord by applying pressure through collective actions for reductions in our rent increases.
Landlords and the Tribunal are not on our side. We are fighting rent increases this year that are the highest they’ve been in decades. Say, “No!” to hikes TOGETHER as neighbours. If you would like help fighting against your rent increase, don't hesitate to reach out.

SLAM is organizing a rally this Saturday, January 25th, to give a helping hand to Melissa with her move and to demonstrate against her eviction. The rally starts Saturday, at 12pm, at 348 rue Argyle (the closest metro is Verdun métro).
Further details and information can be found on our Facebook and Instagram. We encourage people to share the event widely!
Last Sunday, January 12th, we hosted a public meeting in Verdun attended by dozens of tenants to plan an eviction defense for Melissa. You can check out our reportback on the meeting which is up on some of our socials (or write back and we'll send you a copy).
Why should we start to fight even when Melissa is moving? Because no one should have to be forced out of their home. Our message to landlords, who watch our actions, is that we will no longer leave our homes quietly, that there are certain actions and people we will make public. In this case, we are calling out the landlord, Lyne Cyr, who we are not afraid to name. Our message to fellow tenants: our renting conditions aren’t personal. We need to stop seeing them that way. When renting is expensive or oppressive it’s because of housing based on a market, profit-making, & hierarchy instead of community need & autonomy. This reality can be changed. We can build a rapport de force against landlord power -- tenant power -- but we’ll need everyone’s solidarity, coordination, and action in united defence against each attack.

From 2022: How an Undercover Colorado Springs Police Officer Tried to Entrap #Leftists with Illegal Firearms Charges
March 8, 2022, #ItsGoingDown
"Thanks to reporting from Colorado Springs Independent, it is now public knowledge that #ColoradoSprings Police infiltrated the #ChinookCenter and a number of groups that organize there such as Colorado Springs #DemocraticSocialistsOf merica (#DSA) and Colorado Springs #TenantUnion, using a pink haired cop named April Rogers who went by 'Chelsie Kurti' and pretended to be a sex worker.
"#CSPD’s infiltration of Chinook Center initially looked exactly like their infiltration of Colorado Springs Socialists back in 2017: Go undercover into an easy-to-join leftist group, surveil, and arrest as many people as possible as soon as they take a march off the sidewalk. However, we recently had a couple of local activists who had previously been involved with Chinook Center reach out to us with their experiences involving CSPD officer April Rogers. These experiences show a police department desperate to entrap leftist organizers. If there’s no crime, Colorado Springs Police Department will create one.
"If you are involved in any level of left-wing, anti-capitalist, or anti-state political organizing – tighten up your security. We highly encourage anyone involved in radical organizing to create an alias for yourself and use a separate phone number and email for organizing purposes. Apps like Burner and MySudo provide burner phone numbers and emails. You can also follow this guide to create an anonymous Signal number.
"As this situation with the Chinook Center also shows, standing with survivors of abuse can also protect you from police infiltration.
"The CSPD undercover wasn’t going around smashing windows or planting piles of bricks in order to justify violent police repression, she was quietly surveilling everyone she could, asking for personal information, adding folks on social media, and as we’ve recently learned, working to get local leftists to buy firearms for her illegally. Officer April Rogers repeatedly asked about levels of gun knowledge, about building firearms, and suggested making straw purchases. She also spoke about some kind of front range gun running operation, and suggested starting a leftist 'militia.'
"We’ve attached statements from two leftist organizers who had the misfortune of being targeted by Officer April Rogers posing as Chelsi Kurti. These statements provide an important look into the tactics of the police, and show that they’ll create crimes where there are none. The idea that your group is above ground and therefore you were never in any danger is incredibly naive."

Yesterday, members of the LA Tenants Union, "protested outside the house of Danny Levin, COO of TDI Properties, which has ignored tenants' demands for repairs to be made.
TDI Properties is refusing to do pest control, repair broken windows, or replace cabinets chewed by mice.
This "intentional neglect" is a tactic landlords use to pressure rent-stabilized tenants out so that they can re-rent at market rate."
