  1. You can spend years moving through the world under the impression that what you notice is what’s there, until something in that certainty begins to thin and you begin to sense that the field has always been wider than the habits shaping your attention, and that what comes into view now was never absent, only waiting for you to be able to notice it.

  4. 🧵1/2 I attended a wonderful presentation by Temple Grandin this morning. Like in person. I’m still floating on air. It was moving. I’ve read her books and seen presentations online before. But getting the chance to see her in person and talk to her was amazeballs.

I have an audio recording. DM me if you’d like a link.

  6. Fangirling at the #LondonVetShow over the amazing #TempleGrandin, an autistic animal scientist who has an insightful view of the animal world and completely revolutionised cattle handling.....here she's talking about pet practice....why do we expect dogs to be happy about being lifted up and placed on a slippery table?! And then we start poking and prodding them! #veterinary #animalwelfare #dogsofmastodon

In "The Autistic Brain," #TempleGrandin describes her theories about the different ways we process information. She concludes with advice on how we can find success in life by focusing on our strengths.

  8. Team retreat at the Eames Archives and Ranch

Last week, the Eames Institute Digital Product team got together at the newly-opened Eames Archives in Richmond, CA and the currently-under-renovation Ranch in Petaluma, CA. Llisa Demetrios – one of the Eames grandchildren, a founder of the Eames Institute, and our Chief Curator – gave DP a private tour of the Archives, and we walked from one end of the Ranch to […]

  9. I (Ariel) recently listened to the audiobook version of Animals in Translation: Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal Behavior by Temple Grandin and Catherine Johnson. It really shone a light on how far we’ve come both in our understanding of neurodiversity and language around it; it also cause me to realize how very little I actually know about animal behaviour. It’s free to read over on our Patreon; come over and take a look!

  10. @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs
Several years ago I attended a fascinating presentation by #TempleGrandin. A woman in the audience asked her, "How do we go about getting an #autism diagnosis for our son?"
Temple asked, "Does your son need #accommodations at school or other services?"
    Woman: "No."
Temple: "Why are you seeking a diagnosis?"

  11. "People ask me 'what would you do to fix the schools'. I'd put all the hands-on classes back in; shop, sewing, woodworking, musical instruments, theatre... auto-shop, welding, home economics. I'd put all that back in. All the practical things."

⭐⭐⭐ Eye-opening book about thinking, memory, and problem solving.

I'm conflicted about how to properly review this book. On the one hand, I loved the topic; it was revelatory, and made me understand myself and other people better. For the record, I fit almost perfectly into what she calls a "spatial thinker".

..."overload" aspect, as my feeling is that neither #PeterAutism, nor #TempleGrandin would object to this assertion, I would think.

However, the citation from Dr. #Grandin regarding the comparison to LLM's and providing as much data as possible for differentiation, makes me things that at least she does not share this point of view anymore. (correct?)

... quite the opposite, quoting Dr. #TempleGrandin, another autism expert, in my understanding*

What it really comes down to, is this: we should focus much more on bottom-up learning than the classic top-down learning that typifies education. In practice, this indeed comes down to what #Temple promotes so hard these days: ‘exposure‘. Expose children to many and above all different experiences."

    What am I missing?

  15. Loved this article from #TempleGrandin, published today:

    nytimes.com/2023/01/09/opinion

"Today, we want our students to be well-rounded; we should think about making sure that the #education we provide is as well."
