  1. And here I thought Jack Nilles was a true pioneer when he first coined #Teleworking back in 1973, a unique opportunity to embrace #DistanceWorking as an operating model at the workplace. Errr, nope!

Allow me to introduce you all to Dame Steve Shirley 👉🏻 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Sh

1962. A whopping 64 years ago! Founder of a software company employing 300 remote workers: all women (working mums) 👌🏻😍

  2. One more worth reflecting on:

“In addition to the daily economics there’s the problem of coping with disasters. Floods, fires, terrorist attacks, earthquakes & just plain lousy weather are all occasions where telecommuting has proven effective in rapid recovery — to the point where a telecommuting plan is a necessary component of the disaster plan of every State of California government department”

    Heat waves, anyone? 🥵

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #Teleworking

  3. “Telecommuters don’t need as much office space. The productivity of telecommuters is higher than that of their in-office colleagues. Telecommuters are more loyal to their employers; they don’t use as much sick leave as their non-telecommuting colleagues. They don’t even need to live near your facilities — or in your country, if you’re finding that quality talent is hard to come by locally”

  4. A couple of noteworthy quotes:

"Telecommuting is one important way of stretching our dwindling oil supplies and forestalling global warming while we invent viable and sustainable alternatives to those portents of disaster”

Remember, Jack wrote that fine article back in 2006... What were you doing back then? 🤔

  5. “Telecommuting is the substitution of information technology for the daily commute to and from the office” - Management by Results 👉🏻 jacknilles.substack.com/p/disa

The one & only Jack Nilles wrote that piece back in 2006. Pretty crazy, eh?!? 🤯 Now, read through it carefully, while we're in the midst of this week's nasty heat weave 🥵, and ask yourself:

What are we doing wrong?!?! 🤦🏻🤬

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #BusinessContinuity #Resilience #Teleworking

  6. "We taught the remote workers to be proactive about communicating with their group members; not to wait in hopes of receiving calls. Often, you can tell whether someone is feeling well or poorly just by the tone of voice. We taught the managers of remote workers to check that effective communications were happening"

Oooh, for those at the back ... Jack coined #Telework in 1973!!! 😍👍🏻

    Does that ring a bell? 🤯👉🏻 #EnergyCrisis

    #RemoteWork #DistanceWorking #HybridWork #DistributedWork #Teleworking

  7. "In my opinion, given the technology available today, 90%+ of most business situations (other than the obvious hands-on things like your annual medical checkup) do not require face-time" 👉🏻 jacknilles.substack.com/p/face

You know what's pretty crazy about that quote ? It was written by the father of the concept of #Teleworking, Jack Nilles, back in 2010! 😳🤯

Yeah, we know, #RemoteWork is nothing new, and yet ... 🤔

  8. CW: Note: The chair guardian

I guess it’s sweet that the dog has decided that I’m not to leave my home office without her noticing. But when the naps right behind my wheelie chair I worry she’s going to get her paws run over! ×

JTA wrote a LinkedIn post about Three Rings, its remote-first culture, doing things in person, and crisis management, and it's brilliant.

  11. RE: “WE have to create a new way from here and now, and that probably involves the current willing humans (if not you) to change what they do and tangent from there” 👈🏻 See? You’re proving *exactly* my point! The “WE” just doesn’t exist if we first don’t change the conditions under which people operate for them to change.

I’ll give you an example: #Teleworking was coined back in 1973 by willing humans & it wasn’t until March 2020 it became accepted as a working practice. 53 years later!

    [1/3]

  12. @collective_truth Here is another example I can think about to understand how bad urgency is when you're trying to promote a lasting social / societal change for the better. In today's turmoil times with the emerging oil crisis, do you know how old #Teleworking is as a concept?

  13. RE: mastodon.green/@peterdutoit/11

I'd go one step further, if I may ... Why aren't workers themselves "demanding" to both their employers AND governments to have multiple days working from home for the next foreseeable future establishing #DistanceWorking as a new operating model (for those who can) to help mitigate some of the direct pain they are suffering from (Read ... $$$)

Have we learned anything? It's not as if we are back to 1973, right? 🤔

  14. My "commute" since moving to the Chicory House isn't much longer than it is at our regular home, but it does involve going outside. Want to see?

  15. Now that we've finished our move into the Chicory House, I have for the first time in over two months been able to set up my preferred coding environment... with a proper monitor on a proper desk with a proper office chair. Bliss!

  16. Today's mission in what we're calling the Chicory House - our home while our actual house gets repaired - was to unpack the kitchen. I think it's looking pretty good!

(The cardboard box you can see contains pans we brought with us that turn out to be incompatible with the induction hobs at the Chicory House, boo!)

Next weekend's mission will be to set myself up a workspace that isn't the conservatory dining table. 😬

  17. I've lived in a LOT of different places these last few months while we've been arranging a place to live for the next six months or so of our house repairs. Each new AirBnB has had its pros and cons (and each hasn't felt like "home").

But man, I really like the "garden office" at our current one. So nice to work in the sun!

(I don't like the slow WiFi as much, but yeah... pros and cons!)

  18. Just a mini-blep this Twenty-Sixth of Bleptember, from a certain attention-seeking doggo who insisted on a cuddle from me while I sat in a Zoom meeting.

  19. Off to my first day at Firstup. Gotta have an induction: get my ID badge, learn where the toilets are, how to refill the coffee machine, and all that jazz.

Except, of course, none of those steps will be part of my induction. Because, yet again, I've taken a remote-first position. I'm 100% sold that, for me, remote/distributed work helps me bring my most-productive self. It might not be for everybody, but it's great for me.

And now: I'm going to find out where the water cooler is. No, wait... some other thing!

  20. I decided to take my meeting with my coach today in our house's new library, which my metamour @misterjta has recently been working hard on decorating, constructing, and filling with books. The room's not quite finished, but it made for a brilliant space for a bit of quiet reflection and self-growth work.

(Incidentally: I might be treating "lives in a house with a library" as a measure of personal success. Like: this is what winning at life looks like, right? Because whatever else goes wrong, at least you can go hide in the library!)

  21. @bespacific @danlyke It’s hard to accept these astonishing results. If you heat a well-insulated commercial building for 1000 workers, surely that has a much lower footprint than heating 1000 individual homes (many of which are likely poorly insulated). Surely car emissions are insignificant compared to that difference.

What they do not seem to account for is careless idiots who will heat their house even when no one is home, or to a level comfortable for humans when only pets are in the house. Office working would have less impact than #teleworking if done right (cycle to work and leave the home cold when working).

  22. Step/ski into my office! Today I'm working from a cafe overlooking an indoor ski slope where my kids are having lessons!
