  1. Are you really really REALLY bored and want 500ish pages listing all the parts/cable/equipment that was available for a BT engineer to order through the British Telecom Stores department in 1996?

Then my friend, I have you covered:

  6. This large "house" in #Stowmarket #Suffolk #England might look a bit unusual - round the corner you can see why - it is the local #TelephoneExchange ! (it is apparently going to be kept after analogue circuit switch off, as its used as a handover point for #fibre circuits)

  7. I’ve been going around asking friends and acquaintances whether they’d like a number on my furry telephone exchange (FUR-xxxx on PhreakNet). So far, I’ve gotten four requests for subscriber number 3621. Unsurprising. #phreaknet #telephone #telephoneexchange #voip

  8. Does anyone happen to have any documentation for a British Telecom "Tester 420A" ISDN BRI tester.

Also known as the T4200 - seemingly made by Fulcrum Communications in the early 1990s

It's throwing some error codes at me, and I'd really like to know what they mean!

  14. @ety my shenanigans are mostly on much older kit than your average home lab phone setup (#electromechanical #strowger!)

My preference for phone kit is “massive, heavy, and maintained with a spanner” 😂

I just throw a ton of tags at it (usually as many relevant ones as I can fit in the post) #TelephoneExchange #phoneExchange #pbx #vintagePhone are probably my most commonly used.

I’ve been hanging out with @CuTEL a bit over the last couple of years, so I also have some more modern #voip & #dect

  15. My #TelephoneExchange shed has gained a new friend… but they need a name!

    Any suggestions?

Alliteration, puns (and boosts) very much welcome

  16. Is anyone able to lay their hands on a firmware image for a Samsung Ubigate IBG1004?

It’s an #isdn to #sip #telephone gateway, and the one I’ve got seems to be corrupt and won’t decompress.

My usual haunts for firmware images are coming up blank.

The filename will be something like `iBG1004_Advanced_1.6.1.9.Z` - but I'm really not too fussy about the version number!

Please boost if you think you have followers that can help!

  17. Ok #vintageElectronics nerds! tell me about these things…

The “MR” designation denotes some kind of diode (it stands for Metal Rectifier, a notation hangover from before silicon/germanium diodes) and they’re obviously arranged as full bridge rectifiers

They’re in a PSU made for the British Post Office in 1972

The brown stripe seems to denote the + end, but what does the other stripe mean?

  18. Welcome to the #TelephoneExchange shed my new beepyboopy friend!

    This is a “GPO Modem 2B” - a #dialup #modem… phone line in, RS232 out at a whopping 300bps!

It’s all discrete components (no ICs here!) and beautifully built with all the diodes/resistors mounted on little plastic carriers.

The modulator, demodulator etc are on separate, pull-out cards

It’s a gorgeous chunk of engineering, that I’ll be carefully powering up over the next few weeks!

    Thanks for the swap @anachrocomputer

  19. The (extensive) phone system in my house is reachable from the outside world, but I don't like anyone phoning me overnight.

So I've made all the inbound routes time-of-day aware and they now play this message if you phone them overnight

  20. Hotline to #Jesus - combined #church and #TelephoneExchange in #Ipswich #Suffolk #England (in 1980s the electromechanical exchange was replaced by electronic and digital equipment so the old building wasn't needed any more, British Telecom sold it and it and was purchased by the church (an unusual Protestant denomination, inspired by USA churches, they must have been fairly well off to afford to buy this building)

  21. It's taken me a month, but the final part of my "take a #strowger #telephoneExchange to #emfcamp"" video series is now live!

    youtube.com/watch?v=DikYIWUkSd

    Lessons learned:

    - I suck at logistics
    - When stuff is in 3 places, the thing I need is somewhere else
    - heavy thing is heavy, awkward, but omg fun
    - talking that much, next to a rave, drops my voice noticably
    - SD cards are garbage
    - Having fun means I forget to film stuff
    - OMG BASS!
    - It was 200% worth the effort!

  22. The #strowger #telephoneExchange is home from #emf2024 and safely wrestled into the shed.

huge thanks to everyone who made that happen… marrold, callum(?), tommy, my husband James and my next door neighbour for logistics support, everyone at @CuTEL snd @phones for their assistance getting it connected to the rest of the network, Oliver at #NullSector for pointing me at the right things, @noc for the network connection… the whole org team who put the event on, and everyone who visited! #amazing!

  23. Had another great evening in #NullSector last night enthusiastically talking to people about my #TelephoneExchange etc

A couple of people helped me to fill in some of the story about the exchanges life at Ffestiniog, and I've updated the website to be a-bit-less-wrong as a result!

Today is the last day I'll be running the exchange at #emfcamp - but I've got stuff to see and do today, so opening hours will be eratic... but...

if you want to play with a #strowger switch, come find me! #emf2024

  24. Huge thankyou to all the enthusiastic and interesting people who huddled round my 70 year old #strowger #TelephoneExchange in #NullSector at #emfcamp last night... while I shouted myself hoarse about how it works!

I had some great conversations, and it was amazing to see that exchange routing so many #phone calls... It really got a workout last night!

I'll be working on it again this morning, hopefully I can fix some of the broken bits...

    #emf2024 #emf24

  25. I’ve finally got the #strowger #telephoneExchange talking to the @phones / @CuTEL DECT / POTS system.

We can now call in both directions!

I’ve switched it all off while I get some food, but come and find me in Null Sector this evening (I’m opposite the night market) and have a play with telephony circa 1956

  26. “Graphic Design Is My Passion”

It’s taken me almost as long to do the interpretation signage as it did to fix that pesky fault a couple of weeks ago… but it’s printed and ready to go in its packing crate!

    [x] signage done

    #emf2024 #strowger #telephoneExchange

  27. I've got C*Net (ckts.info) access working from the #strowger #TelephoneExchange I'm taking to emfcamp

This was the last major hurdle to overcome before I can start packing. Everything else is cabling or signage related (easy!)

If you have a C*Net connection, you'll be able to dial in to the exchange from off-site, and people will be able to use the demo phones on the exchange (which will be in Null Sector) to call out onto C*Net.

OMG this thing is going to actually happen!!!

  28. I'm still frantically pulling stuff together for taking the #strowger #TelephoneExchange to #emfcamp but rather than actually fix/pack/prepare anything - I've spent the last 3 hours slapping together a video updating the website:

    YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=bOqGNUfohB

Blog about the Cisco stuff I'm using:
    emf.lpbk.net/blog/posts/2024-0

Blog about the astersisk stuff I'm doing:

And of course a post about the video:emf.lpbk.net/blog/posts/2024-0

    RSS Feed: emf.lpbk.net/feed_rss_created.

    #phone

  29. The "how I'm getting a #strowger #telephoneExchange to #emfcamp" blog now has RSS:

    * emf.lpbk.net/feed_rss_created.
    * emf.lpbk.net/feed_json_created

Getting that working was totally not a distracted procrastination exercise last night when I should have been working on making the exchange power supply safe/portable....

  30. I've made another video about getting the #strowger #TelephoneExchange ready for me to take it to #emf2024

In this episode, I try and get the tie lines working...

    youtu.be/tJ9UP861z6E

Oh, and what's that? There's now a website with more information about the #phoneExchange and a blog and everything?

    emf.lpbk.net/blog/posts/2024-0

The site is a work in progress, and will change a /lot/ in the run up to the event.

RSS feeds are on the todo list, but I've got a phone exchange to fix first!

  31. A fault on my #Strowger #telephoneExchange has been kicking my arse all week.

One of the final selectors always sees the tie lines as busy.

I’ve sunk 10+hrs into it so far, cleaning, adjusting, tracing wires, checking coils… it’s doing my head in!

I’m too close to it, so I took today off to bash out a PCB for a silly thing, based on a circuit I haven’t breadboarded, using components I don’t have in stock, and footprints I can’t verify!

I’m sure that’ll work first time! Right?!

  32. One of the selectors in my #strowger #telephoneExchange is stubbornly returning NU tone when connecting out to a tie-line

The TL relay isn’t operating fully, so doesn’t hold in properly.

I dealt with a similar fault back in 2017, but stupidly didn’t make detailed notes - so I’ve got the diagrams out…

  33. I’ve spent the last hour punching down a 50 pair RJ21 connector, by hand, a pair at a time, with a small flat blade screwdriver because I don’t have the right tool.

This is a vital part of my stupid idea to take a #strowger #telephoneExchange to #emfcamp

I’ve got another one of these to do, but that’s a job for tomorrow when my fingers have recovered!

    #telephone #phone #telecoms #telecom #telco #RJ21 #emf #emf24 #emfcamp24

  34. Went through all the line circuits on the #strowger #telephoneExchange this evening, found plenty of faults - including some really odd ones…

The weirdest one is some kind of off-by-one hunting behaviour on the linefinders that will really need the diagrams!

There are more than enough working line circuits for my EMF needs - but I would really like to clear as many faults as possible before then.

    Busy weeks ahead!

  35. Thought I’d give the #strowger #telephoneExchange bit of a workout this evening.

I’ll be running it in a lot over the next couple of months to give any faults time to show themselves before #emfcamp

Tonight though, I ran 100 calls through it (25 per selector) and had 0 failures!

That’s not bad considering I haven’t run it over the winter!

  36. Help!

Does anyone have an ISDX (preferably an isdx-mn) that's running V3.2 of the OS?

Both my boot floppies are bad and throwing checksum errors.

v3.2 is super old! This dinosaur is in captivity, not in regular service, but I'd like it to run again.

If anyone has either a boot disk they can lend me, or a working system that they would be willing to clone a boot disk from - please let me know, I have blanks!

    pls boost!

  37. If you're interested in this sort of thing (and who wouldn't be?!)

The whole notebook full of late 1950s UK telephone routing codes is online as a pdf here: paulseward.com/downloads/Telep

An OCR version will follow at some point in the handwavy future when I get around to it (if I don't forget).

  38. More progress on the AC14 (2280Hz signalling) demo rack!

I’ve fitted all the shelf u-points, which are the strips of spring contacts that mate with the contacts on the back of the relay sets

They're second hand, so I spent lunchtime cleaning off the old wiring. I stopped counting at 60 bits of wire… but there are 160 contacts in total (5x32) - not all had wires on!

The next job is to start putting in the new wiring.

    #strowger #telephoneExchange #phone #phreak #telecoms #telephone

  39. Metalwork done at last!

This shelf holds 4 cans of #gpo #relays that between them form an AC14 “out-of-area” line.

These would have been used to connect a #phone to a line that was too long for pulse dialling to work reliably.

The two on the left are the #TelephoneExchange end, the two on the right are the subscribers end.

Between them, they convert pulse dialling into bursts of 2280Hz tones which can be transmitted much further without distortion

  40. I've just been thoroughly nerd sniped by someone telling me that the #asterisk SMS module supports BT Text, and that it should be possible to make that work on ckts.info

  41. 5 years ago (yesterday) I took delivery of a new #shed to use as a #workshop for my #telephoneExchange collection.

Today it’s full of exciting junk, some of which even works!

    It’s got 4 #strowger exchanges, an #isdx and a load of aging #ciscoVoice kit.

Total capacity is nearly 200 lines!

There are shelves full of spares down one side, and shelves full of #phones and test gear down the other.

The bench is covered in my current project, waiting for the weather to improve so I can paint it!

  42. Oh yeah! I was posting Christmas telephone stuff this month wasn't I..

On Friday I mentioned that The Hull Corporation telephone company launched their Santa service.

Well, here are three examples of the recorded messages that kids could dial up and listen to:

  43. This christmas tree made from a telephone cable was an exhibit at the “Young People's Exhibition”, Imperial Institute, London, 29 December 1936

The cable dates from before PVC insulation was widespread. Each wire was individually insulated with paper, and the whole cable was covered in a lead sheath.

Arranged in “pairs” there are 6024 wires in total.
