@EdwinG #Italian telecom #carriers will implement the same filter soon. I wonder if wild #telemarketers are able to #spoof legitimate, user registered, phone numbers. Perhaps those forgotten or seldom used ones.

Ooh, the persistent nag callers are the worst. 5 calls in a row from the same unrecognized mobile number, less than 60 seconds apart.
Then they tried from a landline, which the phone immediately flagged as spammy telemarketers. then back to the mobile number."Do not disturb" mode set, for the next 60 minutes. Rage into the void, arseholes.

I did a search, and discovered that what I was describing is referred to as "Caller ID Spoofing". It seems there's not a huge amount I can do on my end to prevent it.

I got some call from a random number. It was a guy who claimed my number had dialed him. I assured him I had made no such call. He didn't believe me. He felt I was a telemarketer, and as such, invited me to meet him so I could get the "beating I deserve". I politely declined his offer and bid him adieu.
But, I share his displeasure with telemarketers. And I note that frequently they come from what appears to be local numbers, even if it's clearly from an overseas caller. So, I do wonder if my number was actually portrayed by a telemarketer to this gentleman. Does anyone know how such a thing may work? And what can be done to prevent such a possibility?
I checked my phone's settings, and found that my phone is encrypted. But, I also found, under "credential storage", that a whack of oddball entities are listed as having "trusted credentials" (see image -- it goes on much longer than the screenshot). Anyone else have a similar list? I note there is the option to "clear credentials", but I don't know if this is wise to do.
I use LineageOS 22.2 (Android 15).

We still have a land line telephone, though we both have cell phones as well. The home phone is inundated with calls from telemarketers, which is annoying at best. I get the idea, that it's a job for somebody, but I don't entertain the idea of doing any business, I didn't initiate, with strangers over the telephone. Another weird thing is that often when we answer the phone and say hello, there is nothing from the other end - quiet. Lately, I've taken up a tactic that I use when I don't recognize a number and I get a call ID description of wireless caller or out of area. I answer the phone as:" Alfred's Unicycle Universe."

Just got a call from an AI telemarketer. Coincidentally I just watched the amazing documentary Telemarketers so I tried to talk to the AI and triggered a 'Putting you on the do not call list' response. It's going to get better about harassing the most vulnerable over time, and our legislature is so messed up nobody is going to do anything about it

I found a good way to deal with #Scammers and #Telemarketers when they call.
Answer the phone with:
"Please state the nature of the medical emergency."
When I tried that, they hung up straight away!

@melikhovo #Telemarketers is a brilliant #TVseries, so many layers. As I watched it, I wondered how lower middle class #rightwing viewers would process this. Who would they identify with or admire? The powerful billionaire grifters at the top, or the humble citizen sleuths (one an ex drug addict) who went after them for defrauding the public?

I liked the new HBO documentary mini-series "Telemarketers" a lot. It's a great example of how to center a story on exploited and/or marginalized people rather than the rich & powerful. It's funny, infuriating, and ultimately heartwarming. I did not expect it to be as compelling as it was.

We need more documentaries that devote this much time to letting workers explain their dead end jobs.
Also the cop unions are totally in on the telemarketing scams run in their name on their own supporters: it funds their private bars and lobbying campaigns.
