#USB was created by … wait for it … wait for it … a “boomer”. Ajay Bhatt, born 1957. 5 years younger than myself. I witnessed the internet’s early days while working for #Tektronix. Ya know, a producer of lab quality test & measurement gear, back-in-the-day. Think I’ll go check out that Engadget article now, thanks! 😎 (2/2)

@Jencen @philpem me tooo!
Seriously, I learned so much of what I know about electronics from #tektronix manuals. The people that designed, documented, and built these machines wanted so much for them to remain in service, and I feel compelled to oblige to the best of my abilities. -
ETA2: Oh, right! It was picked up on Saturday as planned. Thanks again everyone!

Anybody local or willing to be local for pickup and retrocomputery got an interest in an antique Tektronix monitor? It's not multisync in the traditional sense, it's _adjustable_ sync, and you can tune it into a variety of resolutions from the outside using a special plastic tool to adjust internal pots.
(My household near UW used it as a gaming monitor circa 2000 or so) (I think it came from Boeing Surplus but don't quote me on that. iirc we mostly ran it at 1024x768.)

Today this transitioned from working in principle to working in fact, so now my Tektronix 7704A analogue oscilloscope has a functioning serial input for the readout system.

Sometimes it’s helpful to have a digital and analog scope to look at the same thing.
I managed to get this HP 3497A test unit up and running, and roughly calibrated using a standard cell.

Four crude circuit board additions that give a serial port to each of these Tektronix 7M13 modules from the early 1970s; now I can animate their electronic text display without having to use 228 pushbuttons.
-
Yesterday I figured out how to automate entering text into a Tektronix text generator from the early 1970s, so that I can animate it.
A quirky protocol that is sort of documented except the exceptions... -
Slowly wrapping my mind around how to work with text on an analogue XY-display.

Today I figured out that I need this strange kludge to permute three pins of this IC and change the order of events (inside an analogue Tektronix 7704A oscilloscope).

I certainly did not expect that all those 228 buttons from the 1970s would just still work 50 years later.

Anyone has experience with Keithley 2461 SMU? When I initialize the digitizer, the trigger model execution waits for the measurement to complete. Instead, I would like it to start collecting data and instantly start the pulse generator.

Today I repaired this Tektronix 7M13 plugin from 1976.
-
In preparation of a small side-project I bought some vintage Tektronix analogue electronic plugins, for the first time in ages. I'm always curious to find out about previous owners; in this case the innocuous label N65236 stands for the 'Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic' in Charleston, South Carolina.

Spent way too much time trying to get this horizontal amplifier not to be biased and failing miserably. All components seem to be fine but the whole is not. Argh.

The Tektronix 7704A oscilloscope is the most modular analogue oscilloscope I know: not only does it have space for four amplifier and trigger plugins, but even the 'display unit' holding the CRT can be swapped for another one.
After several years of owning a spare 'display unit' I finally have a project where this strange feature may turn out to be actually useful. But first these machines need some maintenance and repair. -
Consulting the old manuals researching the technical feasibility of a smallish spin-off project..

Though a rudimentary DSO by today’s standards, I still find this 1980s era Tektronix digitizer plugin to be quite useful. At 100ms and under, it’s got a cool ‘continuous roll’ display that’s handy for slower signals.
This is one of several multi-bay plugins for the 7000 series, and it’s well suited for the 7603 mainframe, with its larger screen.

Good night and sweet dreams. Greetings from the star destroyer.

I set up the first devices in the new laboratory. The electronics laboratory is now fully air-conditioned. Stable temperatures for calibration. Soon the work tables will be set up. #hp #agilent #keysight #tektronix #rohdeubdschwarz

Definitely riding the struggle bus trying to fix this #Tektronix 4907 power supply. A pretty simple linear supply that blows a fuse 33% of the times you turn it on.
Things it's not:
- Any of the loads
- The two saltshaker-sized bulk capacitors
- The crowbar on the +5V rail
Find the schematic on page 208 of this PDF if you'd like to play along...

An update on the lab floor renovation. The flooring is finished, and the lighting is installed. The door and electrical outlets are still missing. I could start planning the lab benches.
Soon the air conditioning will be installed.

With a working GPIB connection (thanks @vk2bea !), I'm able to read out the full error log from my Tektronix TDS754D.
ERROR: diagnostic test failure, digDataFormatDiag, ERROR!!BYTE mode, in demux 200 ,i= 7 memBaseAdr 0x7380010= data = 5600, expectedData[i] = 5500"
ibterm>errlog:next?I'm suspecting (and hoping) this is a bad ram chip). I have a tenuous understanding of the whole system, but I'm only seeing capture errors on some sweep rates, and dependent on which / how many channels are active.
It's an utterly bad-ass instrument, and I'd love to get it back to 100%
