In the evening, the low sun shows up beautifully the old lead mining remnants on the far side of Harwood.
These are marked on the map as disused quarries, shafts, levels and shake holes. No mention of 'hushes' which are what I think are the long scars in the land. Water was dammed up and released to scour off topsoil and loose rock.
A mining method so environmentally destructive that it was discontinued even hundreds of years ago. #NPennines #Teesdale

It's a lovely day here at Beck Foot near where the Harwood beck meets Langdon Beck then into the Tees. I have three gaps to repair here.
The road up to Cow Green reservoir at the top of the hill is very busy with bank holiday visitors.

Went to Middleton-in-Teesdale Farmers Market and got rye sourdough bread from Warwick Bridge mill; kippers, sole and samphire from Collin of Eyemouth; some delicious Bahjis and samosas.
On way back, came round the back road by Coldberry to Newbiggin. There was extensive mining here by the London Lead company and it's very post industrial, spoil heaps everywhere.
Apart from two walkers, there was no one else around. #Teesdale #NPennines

I'm back by the B6277 fixing gaps in the roadside wall. Two cyclists passed today. That one there and, in blue, the masked cyclist, who stopped for a chat this time.
He goes from Middleton-in-Teesdale to the Cumbria border at top of the fell there and back every day in all weather. That's 15 miles each way, 30 miles a day, 10,000 miles in a year. Never cycles anywhere else, never gets bored. I'm glad he introduced himself, really nice fellow. #Cycling #Teesdale

It's a lovely sunny day here and Eve suggested going to Low Force for a walk. That would mean driving 6 miles to a car park that is probably full already and walking among hordes of people.
I've persuaded her to walk about a mile, maybe a little more, to a south facing slope on Neville's farm above the Harwood Beck. Nobody around.
There may be Spring Gentians (Gentiana Verna L.) blooming as the sun is so strong. And no fossil fuel used. #Teesdale #Flora

I had planned to go to my new friend at Nenthead today to continue teaching dry stone walling. However, he's not feeling well and anyway, it's snowing.
Last night, I thought I would go over the other side of the dale and do some work for Neville instead but not in this weather.
Even in my usual rubbish photo through a window, you can see the flakes. Most of it is horizontal as the wind is so strong. #Teesdale #Snow #SemiAlpine

I've been working for Neville again at Lingy Hill, fixed up the wall in the second photo.
In the first photo, the view is up to the watershed between County Durham and Cumbria. The house in that photo, top right, called Rough Rigg, is the second highest house in England.
The highest house accolade is a contest between two properties on the Cumbria side of the fell. One household says its chimney is a few inches taller. Size matters! #Cumbria #Teesdale #NPennines

This is just a short distance from my house but it's in a dip, so no phone signal. Why I'm posting it now.
Another day, another gap in a wall to fix for Neville. He stopped by while feeding sheep and pointed out my next job.
Anyway, it was a beautiful day, warm and sunny. Down to 2 layers, t shirt and old polo shirt. Another neighbour that I had not met stopped to chat for a while. He's a private tenant, so no walls to fix. #Teesdale #NPennines

Events of Christ's 'Passion', as portrayed in the beautiful stained glass window behind the high altar of Staindrop's Grade I listed church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, Co Durham.
From its beginnings as a humble Saxon church, the powerful Neville family had the place of worship substantially altered and enlarged right up until the end of the 14th century, which was the last time any major work was done on it.
Much of the stained glass date from the 19th century
The church stands right of the edge of the Teesdale Raby Estate, home of Lord Barnard.

I'm just back from my first visit to Holwick to do bird surveys for the RSPB. Glorious day for it.
There were many wading birds, saw all the target species, including black grouse. The real highlight was a pair of Ring Ouzel among the rocks of Holwick Scar. #Birds #NPennines #Teesdale

Around midnight last night there was a dusting of snow. It's gone this morning of course.
This morning, I watched a female Lapwing approach to within 2 metres of the kitchen window at the back of the house. It poked in the soil and gobbled up a large worm.
The land here gets nothing in the way of pesticides and only cattle manure for fertiliser, nothing artificial. You don't have to dig deep to find a multitude of invertebrates. #Teesdale #SemiAlpine

It's eerily quiet today. Just the one line of eight cars roaring back from Alston to wherever they come from.
I wonder if they do an A66/M6 circuit via Penrith and the Hartside Pass? It's a challenge.

Pretty harsh conditions for birds out here today. There are four Lapwing holding territory, down from 6 a few days ago. One male, who is bowing and scraping on a mole hill, has a female close by.
Two rose up to mob a female hen harrier that crossed quickly from east to west, also putting up some wood pigeon from the Scots pine.
A snipe flew erratically, drumming. There are three geese with two curlew probing the wet ground. How they survive in these conditions is amazing. #Birds #Teesdale

10pm last night I saw hazard lights in a gateway up the road. They looked like vehicle was at an angle. I knew it wouldn't be the farmer.
I set off with a torch and there's a small transit, front nearside deep in the soft verge, stuck. Inside, a single female failing to get phone signal. I knocked on the window and reassured her.
Took half hour to dig wheel out and tow it back onto road. If you're coming out here, please be careful, it's been very wet, easy to go off and get stuck. #Teesdale

Harwood can be extraordinarily beautiful on a day like this with snow lying and sun and no wind.
Delivery driver dropped off a parcel then took some 360° views, just taking it all in, smiling. He says drivers like coming out here as they're allowed extra time between drops because it's so remote. Less pressure than town or city driving. #Teesdale #Snow #SemiAlpine

A fair amount of snow up here from last night. I believe the A66 was closed at Stainmore again for a time. The road here is passable but we were out yesterday, so no need to go out today.
The rabbits have had a play in the snow and I've put Bramble into the catio for half an hour as the cats are going stir crazy.

When Cow Green Reservoir was constructed in Upper Teesdale, NE England, the flow of the young River Tees became much more controlled.
Most of the time, if you visit High Force waterfall, you will only see the Tees thundering over the Great Whin Sill via the channel on the left side of this view.
However, turn up after a period of heavy rain and you can still catch the magnificent site of a double waterfall, not to mention the roar created by all that peat-stained water plummeting 70 feet (21 m) into the pool at the base of the falls.
The popular visitor attraction is around 5 miles west of Middleton-in-Teesdale and lies within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the European Geopark.

It's quite still but cold so there's much low cloud and mist hanging in the valleys.

I got home from walling and farmer has put cattle back in this field and hasn't yet put a new gate in where they knocked the old, rotten one over behind the house. My bits of twine must be holding, or he isn't bothered if they get out.
Bull is a bit hormonal, has just sent one of his sons flying onto his back across the field and there's been crunching sounds from the wall as he charges around after the cows. It's all going on out here. #Teesdale

I rarely find anything that can date a wall to any precision so this broken bottle is very important. Found in bottom of a dry stone wall near Langdon Beck hotel.
J H Kilner & Sons only operated from Wakefield in a 10 year window from 1847-1857. So the wall must have been built first around that time. What a find!
Made by the company now mostly famous for Kilner jars. I'd like to keep it so I'll discuss it with the tenant farmer when I see him.
