  1. A few (very) short poems from #JimHarrison and #TedKooser's wonderful volume *Braided Creek: A Conversation in Poetry*:

    From p. 4:
    "For sixty-three years I've ground myself /
within this karmic mortar. Yesterday I washed /
it out and put it high on the shelf."

    ---
    From p. 41:
    "A bumblebee,
    a straggly rosebush
staining the air with her scent.
A blue and black butterfly --
too many Bs but life is like that."

    ---
    From p. 56:
"At the end, just a pinch of the world
is all we have left to hold on to,
    the hem of a sheet."

I don't read a lot of poetry outside of the classics we learn in school, and trying to wrap my head around Emily Dickenson, her huge vocabulary and her unusual style have kept me busy my whole adult life.

But I found this poet, Ted Kooser and this book, Winter Morning Walks one hundred postcards to Jim Harrison, (c. 2000, Carnegie Melon university press) and I just love his work. He, and this book, are highly recommended, if my opinion matters!. Here is one of my favorites from the collection:

    December 14

Home from my walk, shoes off, at peace.

The weight of my old dog, Hattie----thirty-five pounds of knocking bones, sighs, tremors and daydreams----
just isn't enough to hold a patch of sun in its place, it slips beneath her and inches away, taking the morning with it----the music from the radio, the tea from my cup, the drowsy yellow hours----
picking up dust and dog hair as it goes.
