"The Israeli startup, formerly known as Future Meat Technologies, had just received approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration to produce and sell its cultivated chicken in America. " Israel meddling is everywhere. I don't agree with the author that cultivated meat is the way to go. #Agroecology #BDS @GMWatch #FoodSecurity #TechnoFix

@jeffcliff @p @smallcircles on what parallel universe is nuclear energy considered "clean" energy with "zero emissions"? one where the narrative and language has clearly been co-opted by the corporate modern slavery purveyors, ie. bigtech and the military industrial intelligence media academia thinktank complex.
a result of years of indoctrination into a school of thought that #carbondioxide is the only problem.... a simple single problem for simple people....so sit back and let your corporate masters defile u now while saying they are serving you the godlike #AI you're told to crave.

Leak at CO2 Injection Facility Raises Alarm Over Dangers of Carbon Capture Tech

Season 3 Episode 3: Carbon Capture and Storage with Prof Mike Bickle
In this episode, Christina talks to Professor Mike Bickle about what methods for carbon capture and storage are the most promising (and the most likely for us to engage in), what some of the dangers are, what it would take to deploy carbon capture and storage at the scale required, and how long it might take us to bring an end to the global warming we’ve created. Prof. Bickle is professor emeritus at the Earth Sciences Department at the University of Cambridge.
Conquering climate change for our survival and that of much of the rest of the biosphere calls for more than attaining net zero emissions of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere. We also need to actively remove much of the 140 extra parts per million of carbon dioxide currently up there in the atmosphere thanks to our burning of fossil fuels and destruction of so much of Earth’s biosphere. Both attaining net zero and going beyond it will take carbon capture and storage. This means capturing carbon dioxide from power plants and other point sources and from our agricultural activities before it gets into the atmosphere, as well as capturing carbon dioxide already in the atmosphere. Then, we need to store that carbon somewhere safely away from the atmosphere for at least a few thousand years.

The #technofix is under scrutiny in #sts. But for a somewhat surprising reason: because of its conceptual weakness. So here is the #infrastructure fix. And thoughts from #LeakageSTS in Dresden: https://stefanlaser.net/2024/04/03/the-technofix-is.html

When faced with challenges, my go-to is to dissect them using math and tech. Detractors often dub this an approach of "#technofix," arguing that the crux of our problems lies in politics, not technology. For instance, electric cars would be labelled as technofix, but... not electric buses. Ponder a bit, and you'll unearth additional examples (feel free to drop them ↓). I find resonance in Jan Dutkiewicz's definition: a technofix is merely a solution that rubs someone the wrong way.

#tech[no]fix, good fix.

What's a #technofix, if not an unpleasing solution? An interesting discussion on Twitter, back then. https://twitter.com/jan_dutkiewicz/status/1475955080343920640

Michael Huesemann: Techno-Fix: Why Technology Wont Save Us Or the Environment (2012) [video]
As much as we’d like to believe that technological innovation will let us magically continue our lifestyle and prevent social, economic, and environmental collapse, Huesemann shows that most technological solutions are ineffective—and, in the presence of continued economic growth, modern technology does not promote sustainability, but hastens collapse.

Ja maar... als we dierenbeulen een levenslang houdverbod op kunnen leggen, waarom zouden we dan een #technofix willen in plaats van een levenslang rijverbod?

Another #technofix for #climatechange has arrived. A startup "has started successfully pulling #carbon dioxide from the air and burying it #underground.
Climeworks announced that it has sequestered #CO2 from the atmosphere using its facility in #Iceland .... The action was independently verified by risk management company DNV, and the resulting carbon credits were sold to #Microsoft, Shopify and Stripe, the startup's first corporate customers."

@dean
Yes we were about to ask about where you learned about the burying from @samuraikid, as reflecting is not an issue in itself, here.Nuance is so important in this debate though, and if we want to come to grips with how to do this in a way that actually works. We need to at least consider and balance all issues.
We can fully understand this man's distress at the continual #encroachment of human #technofix across natural landscapes – its why we talk so often about #LimitsToGrowth.

@vortex_egg In the off chance I've not mentioned it before, Michael & Joyce Heuesemann's Techno-Fix keeps reading absolutely spang-on-point every time I go back to it.
Most especially, I keep thinking "oh, it realy should have included this point", at which I (re)discover that it has.
https://archive.org/details/scm-33066-michaelhuesemanntechno-fixwhyt
There's a long other biography I think we've also discussed before: Adam Curtis, W. Brian Arthur, Foucalt, Neil Postman, etc., etc.

@yaaps
Hi Vidak,There is a tendency on a so-called left to think, "if we can only just sing koombaya together or adopt this #technofix life all will be okay", this is #nihalism because everyone must then prescribe to that, eliminating all diversity and resiliency.
Please see #AlbertBartlett's lecture, we shared it previously.

I'm trying to think about it in terms of system dynamics and feedback loops.
This is a very solid approach, and addresses technology's impacts on society and civilisation.
There's also the questions of what technology IS and how it operates, neither of which seem to be well-formed that I can tell. I'm increasingly frustrated that there seems not to be a good philosophy or theory of technology generally. (Ellul, Foucault, Heidigger, Mumford, Schumpeter, and a few others try, though I find it weak sauce despite some good points). But definition and mechanism both address the good/evil/neutral question.
The work I keep returning to, and finding despite some weaknesses (very dry & technical) compelling strengths (excellent organisation and reasoning) is Michael and Joyce Heusemann's Techno-Fix. It's by technologists, though critical ones, and looks specifically to mechanism.

Does't touch on the #technoFix follies though. For that you need POTHumans we mentioned above.
