  1. 🇵🇸 @small-tech/cross-platform-hostname module deprecated

    npmjs.com/package/@small-tech/

The release of version 1.1.0 deprecates and removes support for this small module that normalised hostname reporting between Linux/macOS and Windows.

We no longer support Windows as Microsoft is complicit in Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people¹ and Small Technology Foundation² stands in solidarity with the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement³.

Windows is an ad-infested and surveillance-ridden dumpster fire of an operating system and, alongside supporting genocide, you are putting both yourself and others at risk by using it.

When supporting Linux/macOS, just use the built-in os.hostname() method which works the same way on both platforms.

  6. All our tech topics get so, so small and unimportant when you consider that hundreds of thousands of people are FORCED to play Squid Game in an area of 365 km².

Up to 335,000 people have already been killed, and we should look at the higher numbers b/c it never helps the dying if people want to be “more correct” by broadcasting a smaller number.

To help someone in a matter of life or death, you assume the WORST.

When, in 1975, [Stafford] Beer argued that 'information is a national resource', he was ahead of his time in treating the question of ownership—just who gets to own the means of data production, not to mention the data?—as a political issue that cannot be reduced to its technological dimensions."

  15. Okay this is interesting: he's telling his buddy that he uses an RSS reader (I think?) to aggregate from thousands of news sources. He says he reads the headlines and then reads some of the "trustworthy" articles to get more information.

Clearly, he's subscribed to some whacko stuff. If you're designing an RSS or news reader, consider this guy and how you could help bring him back to reality or help prevent his radicalization in the first place.
