  1. @tg hi Terry, my name is Masato. And I got to the end of your article about the boring web. I concur with most of what you say about small little Federated services getting a little bit more attention. Like #Mastodon here. And also the durability of these old ancient protocols that continues to persist, even though most people have no idea what goes on underneath.

I’m currently moving backwards to #Teamspeak and himself hosting my own server. It’s delightful! I used to do it a lot more, but I got out of the habit of it mostly due to full-time job and convenience.

But now nowadays, I’m getting much more into it and I’m also going to set up my own little #Apache, Web server, and mean a few friends are gonna make a #WebRing I’m really quite excited to see what it has in store for us.

I’m also eager to continue putting up more and more services and encouraging my friends and family to use them. There is a very high base reluctance for any of them to switch off of what they’re currently doing or using. Meaning they just don’t wanna do it.

But I got a fair enough of people to get off of #Discord. And I’m eager to continue pushing people in what I feel is the right direction.

  6. No shade to the video and other alternatives. They're cool and all and I hope more people move out of Discord so it burns to the ground and never recover again, but I'm 100% confident nobody will talk to me regardless if I use any alternatives to Discord so I'm not seeing myself using one of these anytime soon. It's just pointless for me haha

    #discord #roblox #matrix #teamspeak #rocketchat #mattermost #zulip #stoat #fluxer #element #opensource #selfhosting #selfhost

  7. Before I stopped using it, I told everyone to leave my discord channel because of mental issues. That shit made me feel even more lonely than not using it cos nobody talks to me.

I've always had this trouble with IM's. I guess I'm not very interesting. Now with that age verification crap, I'm not using that thing anymore.

  8. I really hope Discord fucking burns to the ground. Apart from 100% of people using that crap, that place's full of really messed up weirdos and child exploiters, same with Roblox

I did have Matrix back in 2022 but nobody talked to me with that thing so I got rid of it and last time I used Discord was back in December 2025.

  10. sometime, a goodbye is the start for something new? something fresh?
I have, and I want to, say goodbye to my #teamspeak 3 server. i guess this database was not my most precious in the past, but believe it or not, it looks back on a 14 year old history <3
so i have started to poke around with #teamspeak6 in a docker container. its nice, but: the chat function uploads pictures to a S3 bucket of your myTeamSpeak account.

  16. CW: Now that the enshittification of Discord progresses, it's time to consider alternatives. Techcrunch has made a list.

Nice to see Mumble on it, that's the server I ran for my circle when we started gaming together and needed chat. Fine service, I can recommend it.

Teamspeak was the next server I fired up when that same circle decided we needed that, because "everybody else uses it" 🙄. Self-hosted but not Open Source, so I was less enthusiastic about that.

After Teamspeak they moved to Discord, which is neither self-hosted nor Open Source, so that was a hard pass for me.

Let's see if I can get them to use their accounts on my Matrix server now that some of them will realize it's time to move again 😎

  18. Cursed technical problems:
I always have to run ts3client_runscript.sh from command line in foreground.
If I run it in background, it will simply hang with "Trying to resolve hostname..." indefinitely.

  19. Predictable: Discord Users are Flocking to Alternatives

Discord users are responding to its age verification surveillance by flooding to alternatives. History is repeating itself.

  20. So far as far as Discord alternatives go, we can list them here:
IRC(The oldest and still continually used protocol for chatting, but prolly hardest for n00bs to onboard with)
XMPP/Jabber(Second oldest, easier onboarding depending on server)
Matrix(Is fine till you learn about self-hosting your own, cuz that's a real rabbit-hole to fall down in. Also encryption, fun!)
Fluxer(Relatively new, basically straight up copies Old Discord)
Signal(More of a one-to-one private messenger imho, but yeah)
Session(Can be one to many, still untested for me)
SimpleX(Don't know much about this one)
    Cwitch(Or this one…)
DeltaChat(Have used this one before, pretty cool tbh)
    Briar(More of an emergency thing)
    Stoat(Formerly Revolt, interesting one)
    Teamspeak(Another older one!)
Jami(I don't know much about this one tbh)
I'm sure I missed others lol.

  25. I discussed with a friend about migrating to #Teamspeak 6 in light of the #Discord announcement. According to him, since there is no mobile support as of yet, the struggle of getting people away from Discord to Teamspeak is massive. I get it, but I guess this would come down to a few points: how much does one prioritize privacy, how much is a community willing to spend for a server, and how important is having mobile support. #TS6 has come a long way in the past what, 2 years? I'm down for it.

  30. Okay I'm seeing like 4-ish Discord alternatives right now: Teamspeak, Root, Matrix, and Stoat. There's also Signal but that seems more like a return to Skype than what people use Discord for. Am I missing any?

  38. I just found out Teamspeak is back. I've been messing around with TS5 for the past 2 years on my own, wondering when we got more updates. On stream last night, it got brought up without anyone in the chat knowing TS6 got released. I am beyond excited. I've been a fan of TS3 since my commanding days in Guild Wars 2. Can't wait to see this bad boy out there, in the wild.
