So last week I picked up a #TDeck, a battery and an antenna, 3D printed an enclosure and installed #wadamesh to use the device on #meshcore

ok, that was a lot of hashtags.

So, I have some opinions. Disclaimer: I know this is a new open source firmware that's in beta. A lot of my gripes will probably be dealt with very soon. And if I cared enough I could fix some stuff myself and issue pull requests. Anyway, here are my thoughts.

1. My brain apparently does not work with ortholinear keyboards. Not even if typing with my thumbs. What's worse, the placement of "shift" and "sym" keys makes them super hard to use, and I use them a lot ("sym" is needed for numbers or punctuation). I do feel like I could get better at it, but it's going to be a rough ride.

2. The screen shuts off after a few seconds whether I configure it to or not. Like, there's a setting, but changing it doesn't affect anything.

3. Scrolling is super awkward. It has a touch screen, but sometimes a scroll comes with an oops-click, and sometimes it does a weird snap back.

4. The trackpad in the middle of the device is worthless. I don't know if this is from wadamesh or that it's the hardware, but it doesn't scroll reliably. I'd love it if it did, since scrolling on the touch display is so wonky.

5. It crashes a lot. Practically every time I pick it up and tap the screen to wake it, it's on the screen that tells me it has crash data to send. But the UI for the window is weird and scrolled off, and I think there's supposed to be a "send report" button on the popup, but it's hidden. Instead I have to just poke around random things hoping the popup will eventually go away.

6. It's gorgeous! The UI is really nice, especially for a basic as hell $50 ESP32 device

7. Battery life is fantastic. I installed a 5000 mAh LiPo battery, and I get almost three days on a full charge. I think that means if I was using it more I'd get about one full day. I did hear people say 5000 wasn't enough charge for them, so I assume it's just because I'm not transmitting a lot.

8. Features are amazing. The OpenStreetMap integration alone is pretty mind-blowing.

Anyway, I very badly want this thing to be my daily driver on MeshCore, but it's not going to be until I get more accustomed to it, and some of the glitches get ironed out. But holy cow, you can see where this thing is going, and it has a lot of potential.

I'll keep poking around with it, and if I get enough spare time I might see if I can contribute, but in the meantime I think I'll be using the phone app.

This is the #TDeck Max running #TactilityOS with support for the new chipsets found in the #TDeckMax over the Pro. If you got one of these new devices from #LilyGo you're probably wanting some more capability out of it too.

I have a repo I can give you if you want it now. These changes will be pushed upstream to the main TactilityOS repo for inclusion

There's a fix out for the Wi-Fi connection keyboard issue, but there's no chat app, the GPS doesn't work, accelerometer doesn't report, and it doesn't actually connect to the #meshtastic network yet. #TDeck

I shot a video preview of the #MonsterMesh the #Pokemon#Meshtastic firmware for the #TDeck. This is the original project and it's ready to start testing early versions. I'm waiting to post it to reddit on Monday morning to get maximum impact. Mastodon can see it early.

This video only shows some of the functionality. There's also a lot in the pipeline. Including some easter eggs you might be able to figure but by watching the video closely.

Буду по мере успехов и косяков писать наверное. На фотке - написал пока основу модуля читалки. Как дошлифую и соберу побольше шишек от платформы, впихну русскоязычные шрифты перейду к Лоре, либо к 4г-модему/телефону. #tdeck

I'll be releasing the tech demo of my #Meshtastic firmware project for the #TDeck that lets you play #Pokemon or any other GB game on the TDeck inside the meshtastic firmware.
This is probably the first/only preview I will release before we get the Cable Club (PvP Battles) working over off grid meshtastic messages with no internet.

#Tdeck arrived last week.

Pretty cool device, though honestly, the #BruceFirmware has been far more interesting than Meshtastic so far.

Looks like my #lilygo #tdeck just cleared customs this past weekend.

Hopefully I'll get to play with it in the next week or two.

This seems to be a pretty up-to-date guide on how to set up a Mesh network (there wasn't a date on the piece, but they referenced QR codes). Personally, I'd rather go the #HamRadio route, but there's a few hoops to jump through for that (like the Ham radio test and licensing).

OK, it is a standalone device with a rudimentary keyboard and touchscreen, but there are more disadvantages, e.g.,

1. For setting up the device, you need to put it in a dedicated bluetooth mode and use an app on your mobile phone,

2. the GUI lacks many features of the app (such as a context menu for nodes),,

So I went on to resume my #Meshtastic experiments.

Yesterday used my #Wireguard VPN to broadcast my coordinates from the phone while the 868 MHz #tdeck was left at home on the wifi.

It worked just fine :)

FINALLY! A little clear time and headspace to work on a few bits and bobs. Been putting together my #tdeck #meshtastic setup, but I still also have my #picocalc and a wonderful @rc2014 picasso kit to put together! Progress in the coming weeks!

Es funktionierte nicht auf Anhieb, musste ich doch zunächst die GPS Sensor Baudrate von 9.600 auf 38.400 ändern, und das Erstellen der Kartenausschnitte (5 Stunden) und das auf die SD-Karte schreiben (nochmal 4 Stunden) hat ebenfalls "ein wenig" gedauert, aber schlussendlich ist mein T-Deck einsatzbereit 😀

Rapidly moving my meshtastic nodes over to meshcore 🤘🏿

Going very smoothly so far. Meshcore is notably very fast at message delivery and delivery confirmations back to the sender.

Thinking I'll leave my primary meshtastic infrastructure nodes up and build meshcore nodes to deploy next to them so as the network matures I can do head to head comparisons.

And aww, it feels so cool to chat over radio without a smartphone or any internet connection.
