Ein neuer Gerichtsbeschluss zeigt nun, dass das Innenministerium seine Forderungen noch nicht eingeschränkt hat – selbst für Kunden außerhalb des Vereinigten Königreichs, für die Apple bereits die optionale Extra‑Verschlüsselung für iCloud entfernte. Der Investigatory Powers‑Act gibt den britischen Behörden theoretisch extraterritoriale Zugriffsrechte, was zu Spannungen mit den USA und Kritik als „Snooper’s Charter“ geführt hat. Die Regierung bestätigt weder das Vorhandensein noch das Wegfallen der entsprechenden Anordnung.
Interessant ist in diesem Zusammenhang jedoch die TCN, die Technical Capability Notice, vom Innenministerium, über die Apple nach den Bestimmungen des Investigatory Powers‑Acts nicht öffentlich sprechen darf. Demnach gehe es eben nicht nur unter ADP gespeicherte Daten, sondern um weltweit alle in der iCloud gespeicherten Daten.
Sollte Apple den Prozess gewinnen, sollen die Ergebnisse veröffentlicht werden. Wenn nicht, werden es User nicht öffentlich erfahren. Das braucht es dann aber auch nicht mehr. Das wäre Ergebnis genug.

Reuters phrases it this way:

…which does not say anything about not-backdooring British citizens.

Somehow I can’t imagine the British government wanting any kind of legal precedent to be set in this matter.

Apple responded by withdrawing ADP from the UK market, and started a legal process to challenge the order. This was due to be heard at a tribunal in early 2026.

It is not yet clear whether that will continue to go ahead.

Tulsi Gabbard said in a post on X the UK had agreed to drop its instruction for the tech giant to provide a “back door” which would have “enabled access to the protected encrypted data of American citizens and encroached on our civil liberties”.

The BBC understands Apple has not yet received any formal communication from either the US or UK governments.
