As a TCK that had a pretty crazy childhood followed by a lot of travel as a human (not a tourist), I did a lot of nodding as I read this.

That this is something worth mentioning by the BBC has me mildly boggled too.

1/x I sat with a younger friend and had coffee, and the first few minutes were about how much has happened in the last 2 weeks. We are both outsiders looking in just about everywhere we are ( #tck ). We are used to differing cultures and watching what happens between polarized groups all the time.

It's draining watching people with so much in common being so polarized on social media, by social media, by politicians, by news, by... carrier pigeon... Maduro going to NYC is only 2 weeks ago.

I don't remember all of the movies I introduced my friends to this way, but they definitely included #TheLastUnicorn, #TheNeverendingStory, and #TheDarkCrystal.

Growing up as a #bilingual #ThirdCultureKid can be fun, but it is definitely weird most of the time.

Filipino Heritage 2of2

Personally, I love cooking nutritious regional dishes (more info in comments) like "pinakbet" for my family. I don't often post about it because my culinary world is so wonderfully diverse, influenced by friends, family, and even past partners.

Being mixed-race myself (Portuguese, Spanish, Italian) has also shaped my understanding of #multiculturalism, something I've experienced firsthand as a #ThirdCultureKid #TCK i.e. someone raised in a culture different from their parents' or their country of nationality.

Got a reminder this evening of a spectacular German word: "Arschgeige" (loosely pronounced "ARSH guy guh"). It's a word used for a person who's a complete screw-up.

Literally translated, it means "ass fiddle."

An example sentence is:

In Darmstadt, Germany, where I grew up, there is a huge public park toward the southeast edge of the city. It's called "Lichtwiese," which translates to "Meadow of Light."
