  1. RE: ecoevo.social/@DrPlanktonguy/1

Since the #scientificname of a #species consists of two main components—#genus and #epitheton#taxonomists describing #newspecies regularly face the question: what should I name my species after? Personally, I prefer an ecological characterization of the species via its #epithet. But scientists/celebrities are also frequently honored. The fact that it was now even an entire #televisionseries is a great anecdote, but has strict reference to nature work (BBC#BluePlanet)

  6. 🇧🇷 Even if CNPq has increased its financial support to #biological #taxonomists in Brazil in the latest edition of the Protax programme, it overlooks the critical role of #fieldwork and #collections,

says Ricardo da Silva Ribeiro in his recent Commentary paper.

  7. When me meet someone new, we introduce ourselves: what's our name, where we belong to, what our role is, etc.
Organisms can't do that. That's what #taxonomists do: we make #biodiversity accessible. #TaxonomistAppreciationDay

  8. I love #MantisFlies (#Neuropera, #Mantispidae). Here's a handheld shot of #Spaminta minjerribae here in #Canberra last night.

This is one of the surprisingly large number of groups where #taxonomists seem to have given up trying to think of new genus names and just generate anagrams of older names. Mantispa -> Spaminta. In another neuropteran group, the genus name Ascalaphus has simply been reversed to give Suhpalacsa, which I can never type.

  13. Successful lab trip to #tamu #insect collection to identify #pollinators we have been collecting on #ranches in North Texas. Thanks to the #taxonomists who helped us!

  14. #introduction I'm 🆕 here, saying hello! An educator who evolved into a #BiodiversityInformatics Community Liaison. I enjoy helping folks create data & use software to be able to get where they need / want to go with #biodiversity & related data.

    Passionate abt #community building, #KnowledgeTransfer & saying #YesAnd. Currently, I work closely with #taxonomists via speciesfilegroup.org/
