We blogged earlier about how the Federal Government seems set to not just ignore the obvious gas policy of a 25% export tax, but to have a reservation policy that will benefit ultimate villains, Santos.

The source of Santos’ superpowers is South Australia. Check out our 2024 report on The oil and gas industry in South Australia, and here are a few fun facts:

Santos CEO Kevin Gallagher was named as the most powerful person in South Australia, in 2023. The Premier, Peter Malinauskas, came in third.
The Premier’s brother was Head of External Affairs at Santos at the time.
Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis once told a gas industry conference that the “South Australian Government is at your disposal”.
SA Senator and Foreign Minister Penny Wong really likes Santos.
The source of this power appears to be personal connections, because it certainly isn’t taxes, royalties or jobs:

0.1% of SA jobs are in oil and gas extraction. More people work in mushroom and vegetable growing.
0.4% of the State Government’s revenue is oil and gas royalties. More state government services in South Australia are funded by the lottery than by royalties from the oil and gas industry.

## Gas Industry taking Australians for mugs!

As if it wasn’t enough that #Japan *onsells* the gas it buys from Australia (through #Singapore companies) at a handsome profit, now #China is doing it as well. It speaks volume for how easy it is to con our govt into submission and give up on the idea taxing #GasExports. So, #Elbow is not only working for Japan but China as well… But *don’t you worry ‘bout that* (quoting a famous #Grifting ex-State Premier) the govt is implementing a *domestic gas reserve*, FFS.

“Santos might not be worried about the gas reservation, but the Queensland LNP government is pretending it is. It wants the gas reservation policy to only apply to new gas, because it’s allegedly worried about its contracts.

Which is doubly laughable, once you learn that China is now on-selling about the same amount of gas (in terms of volume) as it receives from it’s Queensland contracts. Because it has so much gas it has now joined Japan in creating its own gas market from Australian gas. Isn’t that neat?” (Source: The Point Live - today)

#YanisVaroufakis screams the *Obvious* in this Guardian Article. The #RBA decision to hike up the #CashRate ‘is not an anti-inflation policy. Not only are the #Oil importers fleecing all and sundry while the #US-Israeli war on #Iran and the #Russian war on #Ukraine provide the excuses to raise the price of a barrel, but the #GasExporters are racking it in because of increased demand worldwide. And in Australia, these gas #Grifters are profiting from minimal tax to no export tax whatsoever allowing #Japan to buy the Gas more cheaply and onsell it (some of back to Australia now and again) for a #profit (another cause of inflation). Meanwhile, every Australian #mortgagee is paying for it. Hence Varoufakis’s righteous indignation:

“No plausible rise in the cash rate will open up the strait of Hormuz, or convince Gulf insurers to lower their premiums, or compel a barrel of Brent crude priced in a global market to come down because a Melbourne mortgage holder is stressed. What it will do is suppress Australians’ spending, wages, their ability to keep a roof over their heads, ultimately their economy’s capacity to invest and to produce. It is a little like treating a broken leg by amputating the healthy one.”

No *wage earner* should put up with this vile economic trickery or the politicians who complicitely enable the #plunder of our #resources and our meagre, hard-earned income. It’s time to put **real representatives** in Parliament and not *stooges* for the #RentierClass

Yes. Time of use tariffs where introduced by the #grifters to get around a loss of profits due to household power generation inroads into their monopolist market. Yet another reason why critical sectors such as *energy* ought to be in *Public* hands.

This is rich. #FossilFuelCompanies blaming each other (as well as the NT govenment) for their own failures to clean up decommissionned wells. #Grifters blaming #other #Grifters for… check notes… #Grifting. What a bunch of *Scrooges*.

They blame the NT govt because it’s not cutting corners in cleaning up the mess left behind in the #TimorSea by #Woodside and the company it sold the delapidated assets to as they wrote the #Endeavour off their books at around 100% discount — #Grifting never stops.

And this is just **One** example of the industry’s absolute disregard for the #environment, their #SocialLicence and what they are legally required to do when retiring #wells. *Grifters* doesn’t half cover their despicable practices.

At least the NT Govt has seen fit to #Fine the industry as a whole to cover the clean up costs and perhaps try to teach the industry a lesson they will not forget. They shoud double the fine imo — it’s not as if the fossil fuel industry can’t afford it. Even doubling wouldn’t cover the damage done over the years.

We already know that #Labor is ‘owned’ by #FossilFuelInterests and the biggest culprit here is the #WA govt which has *granted* Woodside's Browse to North West Shelf project the politically motivated designation of ‘State Significant Project’ status. What a bloody circus. As if we need more reasons to vote #Labor out of office.
