#AlanKohler is on board with Govt doing the job of building #SocialHousing as it cuts through a number of walls that seem intent on making sure Australia will never have enough houses to meet the needs of its population at an affordable cost/price.
“Like the NDIS (and child care), housing affordability is unsustainable and can't be left to be a by-product of monetary policy, the productivity and profitability of the building industry and the zoning vagaries of local councils.

Non-profit coop housing has been working for decades in Europe. It is no different from good govt social housing , also working well in Europe for decades (I spent my early years there in social housing in the late 50s early 60s). Long term agreements in some schems are also decades long and a few are no different from home ownership passed on to kids.
It’s all doable, cost effective, socially responsible and a godsend to low wage workers and those who can least afford housing (there is still the issue of waiting lists because there’s never enough …)
Current housing issues in Australia, just like poverty in Australia IS A POLITICAL DECISION. The sooner the electorate understands this, the sooner we can fix it at the ballot box.

I kind of agree with you, about the controling aspects of the #FossilFuelLobby. On the other hand, if not for fossil fuel, there would be other lobbies seeking #StateCapture. It is in the #moneyedClass interest to excert as much influence as money can buy after all. Remember the Tabacco Lobbies of yore? Same thing. Today we can also point to the #GamblingIndustry and increasingly #DefenceIndustries.Unfortunately, with power comes #Greed and #Corruption and #TheRich like it that way. All we can do is stay one step behind our #Leaders ensuring we don’t fall too far back. And the only way to do that is through the ballot box, consistent activism and community-led campaigns (including petitions, protest sit-ins/marches and boycotts, etc.).
I’m hopeful that consistent messaging by communities eventually cuts through to polies and that our govt (of whatever ilk) will eventually push back against #Zionism and its growing influence in everyday Australian social life because it is so egregious atm.
Also more peeps ought to have a good long think about it all and take a moral and ethical stand vis a vis #Gaza, #WestBank #Lebanon, etc. not much help if peeps keep watching #FoxFakeNews and similar #Cronies IMO.
In the grand scheme of things, we need to break up #Oligarchies , #Oligopolies and get serious about progressive #TaxReform.

Industry reckons Labor's talk of rolling back the 50% CGT discount to pre-1999 days (think indexation + averaging) is not a problem. But let's be real—it's a rort for the rich, pumping up housing prices we can't afford. Treasury's Ken Henry says grandfathering it would just warp markets more.

This statment by the CEO of the Business Council Association is exactly what our #AlboPM is parroting publically:
“Mr Black gave evidence to the Senate inquiry on its second day of public hearings, arguing a levy would be “counterproductive” at a time when Australia needs more investment. […] Energy investors are like butterflies – if they are scared, they fly away,” he said, citing the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA).”
Which, of course, is absolute BS. All that investors need for incentive is a sound #BusinessCase that promisses #Profit. ANY PROFIT above the #CashRate will do. It doesn’t have to be the promisse of #Pilfering or #Sacking an economy FFS. ANy fool understands this. WHY doesn’t the #PM get it? If #AlboPM is not fool (and I have no reason to think he is), then HE IS COMPLICIT in the rape and sacking of the country by #Multinationals and the #ExtractiveIndustries - pure and simple (Because based on numbers, it’s not about jobs). And the #NationalSecurity ballon won’t fly here either.
I’m getting fed up hearing this neoliberal lie over and over and over again…

It is very clear to me that the news in #Australia (and possibly elsewhere) is compiled and presented by #Reporters only. That is to say, there is no #Journalism involved. No analysis, no critical thinking skills isinvolved and certainly very little, if any, informative reports on which an audiance might rely to form a considered opinion.
E.g. On #ABCNews24, the ‘reporter’ correctly parrotted the words of those opposed to any #GasProfitTax because ‘it would impact adversely Australian relations with its trading partners who rely on the exported gas’. Coming after a torrent of words describing what occured during the Parliamentary Estimate Committee on the matter, the viewer might be forgiven for not taking the time to weight the words and apply some logic: towit, a tax on gas profit does nothing to alter the amount of gas exported, hence no effect on trading partner relationships. Therefore, the #GasLobby is deliberatly misdirecting by spreading disinformation. And the same is true with that lobby group’s tired dire warning that the tax will deincentivise future investors. BS of course, because if there is a dollar to be made and despite a very high tax on profit, as in Denmark, there is still a buck to be made which investor will of course put up capital funds in order to collect.

My advice to ‘tradies’ is to ditch their fuel guzzling diesel #Trucks and purchase a BEV Van instead. Sure looks less #Blokey but it keeps the business going regardless, especially if tradies install PV panels and PV Btty on their home as well. It’s a no-brainer really. Heck, if you can’t afford a BEV Van, take out a lease and benefit from tax concessions. Monster 4WD ute owners winging about cost of fuel ought to start thinking with their brains and not their dicks IMO. Happy to take flak on this. -

House prices keep skyrocketing (2.7% national jump Dec '25 qtr, 7.5% in WA!), juiced by demand-side handouts like the 5% deposit scheme.
