  3. I asked Gemini a tax question, and it gave a plausibly nuanced answer, which was completely wrong. A wrong answer with lots of detail!

I asked if Ukraine’s Come Back Alive was US tax deductible. I didn’t think so, and couldn’t find the any info on the website, but I wanted to check. The correct answer is no.

Gemini said, yes if you go through a nonexistent US intermediary 501.c(3) and happily gave me a website and tax id.

The website (a dot-org) doesn’t exist. Google Search suggests a dot-com version instead, which is apparently some Meal Team Six podcast.

  6. To our fellow American ADHDers: don't forget today is tax day and the deadline is in about seven hours. If you're like us and have put it off to the last minute, that time is here.

  7. Happy #TaxDay to all who pay, and an even happier day to those who will receive a refund. Now that I am semi-retired (still taking consulting side-gigs) my taxes are a lot easier - so I have been using freetaxusa.com and it is awesome, easy and though I’m sure they harvest some of my info, the convenience and UX are hard to beat. Site askes me questions, then fills out my forms for me. It files electronically, lets me set the date for a bank transfer, and then confirms my returns have been sent and accepted. My long-time tax accountant informed me several years ago that their annual fee was going to double, so I bailed. Now I file my federal returns for free and pay $14.99 to file my state returns. I’m saving hundreds of dollars annually. Sweet👏 #IRS

  9. It was excruciating and took / hours online, using an online tax service for Seniors to go through every step needed for federal and then for state. If I had not been using my own computer with a printer and scanner I would have been forced to scan and save some documents like my W2 form and then get them saved on a flash drive and then plug in that drive to the computer I was using in order to upload documents required.

Basically if you don’t have a computer and printer with scanner, and you are not adept with computers and software, you can’t do your taxes in the US. That’s why a “service” like HR Block racks in a LOT of profit yearly. (We had caregivers I helped scan documents to take to their tax preparer. They averaged less than $22,000 gross pay per year and had to pay $100 to a tax service.)

It’s grim for anyone who receives any documented income in the US. And I’d guess with the theft of vital records for each American, there will be more tentacles of surveillance and schemes to drain more money over these next few years. Aren’t I just a ray of sunshine, ay?

“At the Koreatown tax clinic, many immigrants said they felt a duty to comply w/the law. 'I want to show I have integrity,’ said Manuel Aranguiz, a computer technician from South America, after filing his taxes. 'One of my sons will hopefully be able to sponsor me for a green card one day.’” #TaxDay

Mr. Quebedo, a car mechanic, said the couple has filed their taxes every year because their thinking has been “if one day there’s immigration reform and the chance to legalize our status, we can show that we file our taxes, are not a burden — that we do the right thing.” #TaxDay

  14. “'I don’t know if we can trust this government not to come after us,' Ms. Quebedo said, glancing at their daughter, born in the United States, and their son, brought to the country as a little boy."

  16. On this United States Tax Day, I want to take a moment to worsen the experience of filing your taxes by reminding you that virtually no other country does this shit and we only do this because there is an entire entrenched industry built around the fact that we have to do this in the first place.

  17. RE: mastodon.social/@tusk81/116409

“Six states raised more than $1 billion each in tax revenue from undocumented immigrants living within their borders,” researchers said. “California ($8.5 billion), Texas ($4.9 billion), New York ($3.1 billion), Florida ($1.8 billion), Illinois ($1.5 billion), and New Jersey ($1.3 billion).” #TaxDay

  18. RE: mastodon.social/@tusk81/116409

Overall, undocumented immigrants paid nearly $100 BILLION in taxes in 2022.

Undocumented immigrants contributed $25.7 BILLION to Social Security and $6.4 BILLION to Medicare in 2022—both federal programs they can’t access unless they manage to find a way to adjust their status👇🏽 #TaxDay

  19. On this #TaxDay, your friendly reminder that undocumented immigrants contribute their fair share—and then some.

One study found that across 40 states, “undocumented immigrants pay higher state and local tax rates than the top 1 percent of households living within their borders.”
