PORT TALBOT: Government pays EY £1m to vet Tata’s plea for more furnace money
The UK Government is paying accountancy firm EY £1m to check Tata Steel‘s request for more public money to finish its new furnace in Port Talbot.
Known as an electric arc furnace, it melts scrap steel using electricity. It is the heart of the £1.25bn plan to keep steel being made at the Port Talbot works after the last blast furnace closed in 2024.
Tata says the furnace will be able to make 3.2 million tonnes of steel a year.

The Government’s business department awarded EY the contract on 10 August, for “independent financial due diligence and commercial analysis”. It runs until August 2027.
Tender documents are reported to describe the work as supporting the Government’s assessment of Tata’s request for additional support for the furnace.
A grid connection running months late
The furnace was due to be making steel by early 2028. Then National Grid told Tata in June that the high-voltage connection it needs was running six to eight months late.
Tata is understood to now expect the furnace to be running in late 2028 or early 2029, and to have worked out that higher costs and lost sales from the delay will push the overall bill up significantly.
When the delay first surfaced, Stephen Kinnock, the Aberafan Maesteg MP who is now Secretary of State for Wales, said there was “no formal change in the timetable at this stage”.
Thousands of jobs already gone
The furnace plan was meant to protect 5,000 steel jobs across the UK, but around 2,500 are reported to have already gone in the switch.

The furnace is also politically high-profile: Prime Minister Andy Burnham chose Port Talbot for his first official visit to Wales in August.
Ministers are not saying what they make of Tata’s request. The UK Government has declined to comment, saying any discussions with a private company “would be commercially sensitive”.
Tata bosses are reported to have confirmed last month that talks were under way.

On site, the work is moving. The first sections of the acid tanks for the line that cleans the surface of steel strip, known as a pickle line, arrived at the works this week, Tata says.
Each section weighs around 10 tonnes and came in through the Port of Sheerness. The company says they are the first of a growing number of major deliveries due over the coming weeks and months for both the pickle line and the furnace.
Mark Jones, from the pickle line project team, said: “It’s been a long, long time coming. We’ve been on the project now for around 18 months and it’s all been about the planning stage up until now.”
He said it was “the first time we’ve actually seen something happening from the mechanical aspect”.

PORT TALBOT: The grid firm that’s late plugging in the furnace says batteries could get the next factories connected sooner
New factories in and around Port Talbot could be plugged into the electricity network sooner under a trial of grid-controlled batteries, National Grid says, in a region where even the £1.25bn electric arc furnace is waiting for its connection.
National Grid Electricity Distribution, Net Zero Industry Wales and the Celtic Freeport are launching what they call a multi-year innovation programme to squeeze more out of the existing wires while bigger upgrades are built.
It is the distribution side of National Grid, which runs the local network, rather than the transmission arm building the furnace’s high-voltage connection, a job it told Tata in June was running six to eight months late because of ground conditions and planning.
Batteries the grid switches on and off
The first project will test whether batteries controlled by the network operator, rather than by whoever owns them, can smooth out the peaks and troughs of supply and demand and free up capacity on the network.
If it works, the company says, renewable projects and industrial customers could connect sooner instead of waiting for new substations and cables to be built.
“Our role is to make sure customers can access the electricity they need to grow, decarbonise and invest with confidence,” said Roisin Quinn, president of National Grid Electricity Distribution. “This programme is a direct response to what industrial businesses in South Wales have told us they need.”
“Electricity access is a bottleneck”
Ben Burggraaf, chief executive of Net Zero Industry Wales, put it more bluntly. “Electricity access is a bottleneck and accelerating access is critical in attracting investment,” he said. The programme, he added, would “trial concepts to get more out of existing capacity” and “maximise local generation”.
The idea grew out of the South Wales Industrial Dialogue, in which more than 30 industrial firms worked with the two organisations and came up with more than 25 possible fixes, from earlier connections to more flexible use of the wires already in the ground.
The Freeport’s Investment Zone status means it can be first to test them, said its interim chief executive Cathy Hall. “As we move into the delivery phase for our projects, exploring innovative solutions to known power constraints will be crucial,” she said.
Why the queue matters here
The problem is not new. When the body that plans Britain’s grid held a forum in Swansea in June, its head of Wales listed “uneven connectivity, grid constraints and fuel poverty” among the obstacles, and Burggraaf told the same room Wales could be a clean energy hub only if the grid investment followed.
The furnace is the case everyone points to. The transmission works need two new substations and miles of cable, and the former Aberavon MS who chaired the Senedd’s steel group has said the furnace may not run until autumn 2028, calling for National Grid to face penalties if it slips further.
Others have found ways round the queue. The data centre approved at Margam in May will draw its power through a private wire from the biomass plant next door, skipping the grid altogether, in a boom that Senedd researchers say will need more power than Wales’s entire solar fleet.
The Freeport covers Port Talbot and Milford Haven, and its pitch rests on power-hungry newcomers, from the floating wind hub ABP is designing at the docks with £64m of UK Government money to hydrogen and the supply chain behind them.
“Working closely with customers is central to how we innovate,” said Emily Spearman, innovation director at National Grid Electricity Distribution, who said the partnership was a chance to test approaches “that can accelerate decarbonisation, unlock growth and help shape the future energy system”.
The three organisations have yet to sign the memorandum of understanding setting out how they will work together, and have not put a date on the first battery trial or said where the batteries would go.

Hahaha, hier hebben we Roel Berghuis weer. Oud-FNV-bestuurder bij Tata. En dat merk je. Blind (en als FNV'er mede-verantwoordelijk?) voor de al decennia voortdurende vergiftiging van de omgeving van Tata. In "Met het Oog op Morgen" beklaagde hij zich (ik denk vrijdag) over de regelgeving rond staalslakken die voor Tata zo nadelig uitpakt ("dat helpt ook niet mee"). Tegenwoordig doet ie aan "Advies Groen/Rode verduurzaming". Wat een farce is die man.

PORT TALBOT: Tata is building its new pickle line in a bay the June fire left without a roof
The bay where Tata Steel is building the new pickle line for Port Talbot has no roof at one end. The June fire that burned for two days and brought more than 100 firefighters to the works spread into the bay and the next one over, and the company’s programme lead for the mills says the roof “has been destroyed, it’s gone”.
Andrew McGregor, speaking in a Tata Steel UK video from inside the bay, says the crane girders were badly damaged too, so a crane can no longer run the length of the building. The plan had been to build 30 to 40 tonne modules of steelwork at the far end and crane them into place. They will now be built on the slab.

What the fire did, and what it didn’t
The exit end of the line, where the finished strip comes off, cannot yet be reached safely for foundation work, he says: the exit foundations are “subject to the fire damage”. In June Tata told customers the fire would not affect its £1.25bn electric arc furnace; this is its first account of what the blaze did to the rest of the programme.
There is an upside, in Mr McGregor’s telling. Work on the mill entry accumulator, which feeds the cold mill, was going to have to wait for a summer stop so as not to interrupt production. With the cold mill not running, “now we can do it as soon as we have access”.
“We’re trying to learn from this incident,” he says. “We’re not trying to pre-empt the investigation which needs to happen, but we can’t wait for the investigation either.” A full deluge system was already in the design.

The rest of the bay has been dug out to its basement, 20 or 30 feet below the old mill floor, and is being piled: 410 piles under the process section and another 600 at the entry and exit ends. Water pools on the floor, in a drought. The bay sits below the water table, Mr McGregor says, with springs and a tidal influence, and a dewatering rig runs until the new slab is cast to hold the water down.

A 140-tonne welder and four acid tanks 50 feet up
Coils will come through a new hole in the wall from the hot mill, onto two payoff reels, over the power feed and into a laser welder, at about 140 tonnes the heaviest single piece of the line. From there the strip enters an accumulator that can hold 650 metres of steel, so the line keeps running while the next coil is welded on.

Rinsed, the strip is either oiled and coiled for customers or fed straight into the five-stand cold mill.
Reusing the old bay rather than building new has cost “a lot of services” to relocate, cable by cable, but Mr McGregor says the saving over a new building was “phenomenal”.
The hot mill keeps rolling through it
The other half of his job is the hot mill, which is still rolling around 1.5m tonnes a year while its own life extension is prepared. The summer stop was used to identify and reroute cables and move electrical boxes so foundations can go in; the Christmas stop is the next big window, and the new coil box and crop shear go in next summer.

What to look for next
Half the new slab in the process section is due by October, with steelwork erection starting after that. In six months the entry foundations should be well on; in nine, the structural steel should be up; in twelve, “the height of the mechanical installation and the electrical installation”.
The pickle line and the hot mill upgrade are two of the strands of Project Invictus, the programme built around the electric arc furnace that is to replace the blast furnaces closed in 2024 with the loss of around 2,000 jobs. The furnace itself faces a possible delay of up to eight months over its National Grid connection.

In de omgeving van Tata Steel komen nog steeds meer PAK en metalen neer op de grond dan in gebieden zonder industrie. Dat blijkt uit onze nieuwe depositiemetingen.
In Wijk aan Zee kwamen sommige stoffen, waaronder PAK en lood, iets minder neer dan in eerdere jaren. Het is nog onduidelijk of deze daling structureel is. Het stof kan hinder geven in de dorpen rond Tata Steel.

Bewezen meer ernstig zieke mensen en meer sterfgevallen door overtreding milieuwetgeving. Dat is geen natuurverschijnsel maar komt voort uit winstbejag door bestuurders en eigenaren van #TataSteel.
En dan is een taakstraf voor de verantwoordelijken niet in verhouding tot het aangerichte leed.

Dus bij een eventuele boete (want celstraf komt slechts heel zelden voor) betaalt de Nederlandse belastingbetaler, door de subsidie voor vergroening, gewoon dat bedrag zelf.

Het is voor NOS niet eenvoudig om berichtgeving zuiver te houden maar dat #stikstofslot is een lobbyframe.
Kijk om je heen. Er wordt overal gebouwd. Vooral #tatasteel, #Schiphol en #veehouderij zitten vast want ze opereren illegaal en hebben een negatieve businesscase. En nog wat mestfabrieken en andere vervuilers.
Ze vertegenwoordigen niet 'Nederland'. Dat ze klem zitten is zelfs gezond, zo ontstaat er ruimte voor bedrijven die wél schoon kunnen produceren.
