The blue petrel (Halobaena caerulea) is a small seabird in the family Procellariidae, the only member of its genus. THE OUTDOOR MUSEUM…
I noticed this community hall while driving through Saltwater River—it is a district, not a village—on turrakana-Tasman Peninsula on Tasmania’s east coast. So, of course, I had to stop and photograph it.

What was its attraction? I think it had to do with the building’s isolation, there where it stood on the shore. It was also its typicality. There are other community halls like it that we find dotted across the Tasmanian and Australian landscape.

With a distant shot I tried to capture the building’s loneliness in its environment of bush, coast and big sky.

IN TASMANIA…
Saltwater River. No village here. No town. But there is this old community centre on the shore of the bay. And a VW van.

It was cold with horizontal rain at about 2 p.m. here at White Beach on Turrakana/Tasman Peninsula. Now, at 6pm the sun is bitingly radiant.

IN TASMANIA…
So, this is why Tunnel Bay is called that. Because… there really is a tunnel there.

We were on our way back from a walk to Shipstern Bluff when in a spur of the moment decision we decided to make the side trip to Tunnel Bay. Would it be worth the effort?

The turnoff is signposted and you come across it as you traverse the flatish plateau densely covered in tea tree (Malaleuca, I think) between the sea and the steep escarpment behind. The national parks service has constructed numerous stone steps to the bay and as you descend you realise that you will have to walk up all of them on the way back.

Tunnel Bay is best described as a crescent-shaped rocky beach of large, water-rounded stones. The parks service has constructed a couple seats there in a small clearing above the beach, a good place to take a break and have a snack.

The sea was calm the day we walked in, however, like Shipstern Bluff, I imagine the bay is subject to big waves coming in with the south swell.

Shipsterns and Tunnel Bay make a good day’s walk for those interested in a little exercise and the rugged coast of the Tasman Peninsula.

So, was the side trip to Tunnel Bay worthwhile? Sure was.
