Why we do this work…

There aren’t many rewards in a discipline that is about taking the long term view but occasionally something comes up that you can take some pride in.

Last month, Ed Summers put out a call on Mastodon: digipres.club where he was wrestling with a CD-R format that was difficult to recognize. The disks likely held precious data belonging to his late brother.

Much of the search area had already been examined and narrowed down by folks in the community, including Misty de Meo, Roxi Ruuska, Ethan Gates, and Johan van der Knijff who all contributed suggestions and analysis..

Ed was able to share a copy of one of his disk images, and I had some time that I could dedicate to taking a look as well.

The situation might be familiar to others: a digital file that isn’t recognized by the major file format identification tools, and yet, because of its context, you know it is something that might be important.

I have different experiences with these types of files, sometimes they are valuable (and you want to look after them), sometimes they are not (and it can still benefit you to get rid of them). The process of finding this out often follows a similar path.

In this instance the files turned out to be incredibly valuable and I wanted to elaborate on the path of discovery. Even though it really isn’t very sophisticated, I hope it will be helpful to those with unidentified digital records who might find the task of identifying them quite daunting.

The DR-40XP consumed a set of batteries in 4-5 days sitting on my desk. Three times. And then I realized it had a rattle. Preamps sounded good - big improvement over the prior model, and more importantly they actually shielded the mics on this model so they weren't picking up every phone within 50 feet. Tape machines aren't hard to build, but good tape machines are. Today, there are very few manufacturers who actually build the tape part of the tape machine - the capstan-governed transport mechanism that moves the tape past the heads. This mechanism determines almost everything about how the tape player sounds.

Bought a field mic over the weekend. Going to use it to record soundscapes of my favorite parks/restaurants. Also want to lay down some demo tracks.

Ended up going with the Tascam DR-05XP.

Maybe I'll post my soundscapes on peertube or something.

My TEAC 32-2B is home and operational again. Turns out it’s a rare one, actually being a Tascam X-10 disguised as a TEAC 32-2. Someone casually dropped the Logic Bomb 💣 named tdarr

You can do DISTRIBUTED transcoding remuxing processing and automation of your Media Library

Now this is superbly interesting. All Sound Engineers have Massive, Massive media Libraries and I'm just talking about the audio

Then we have a Massive administrative system which accompanies the audio, because we need to know, what is where and Why, especially full analog audio that is still on Quarter inch Tape Reels, stacked in our large physical audio Archive.

We also have an Administration upon that, because we have carefully written down, which effect we used on which track, why and which parameters because everything is analog and nothing was possibly to be stored in a digital manner; that equipment didn't exist at all.

I have to check how long ago tdarr was developed, but this is a tool set that I needed 35 years ago!
