Just down there is where the first Europeans set foot on Japan in 1543. A Portuguese ship was caught in a storm and anchored. They came ashore for repairs, and it is from these Portuguese that the lord of Tanegashima bought two matchlocks, the first firearms in Japan.

We almost moved to Tanegashima in 2020. In fact it was our first choice before we went to Ikijima. Still, this island has all the vibes of a remote island. Almost as soon as I got off the ferry it felt like time slowed down and relaxation set in. There are differences though... this place is much further south, thus different plant-life and Ryukyu influence. Very cool!

On the ⛴️ ferry for 🏝️ Tanegashima! It has stopped raining but the wind has really picked up. Luckily most of the trip is inside the Kinko Bay and we only have a short stint on the open sea.
