  1. Are there any experts on the Tandy Radio Shack Model 100 who would like to connect?

  2. PROTECTING THE RIGHT TO REPAIR

The first computer in my house was a Tandy 1000. It was made by RadioShack and it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Sure, it was not much to look at with its light brown plastic case and monochrome screen. I am pretty sure my calculator from middle school has more processing power. The laptop I am typing on right now is basically a supercomputer when put up against that Tandy, but it […]

  3. no beep tho

back in the day 12v was mostly for disk motors, audio amps and serial

if ur only running modern flash media a lot of need for 12v goes away

and a trick i'm discovering is you may not actually need 12v for the audio amp, it might limit the maximum volume but jumper 5v over and we indeed get a beep out it 🫡

...well now i need a damn PC XT keyboard 😩

  4. but never mind that lets see if she chooches

info on the 1000 RL is hard to come by, squinting at trickster's old photos, starting from the back there's two 5v wires, two grounds, +12v and probably -12v?

lets feed it 5v off the bench supply and YEAH WE GOT DESKMATE BABY! 😎

  5. Well, here is a text editor that *does* work on the Tandy 1000!

Calvin 2.4, previously "free vi", for 8088+ msdos. Or as the man page calls it, MS-Dog. 😉

I don't have a lot to say here, it's a classic vi clone. This is a very love it or hate it thing. Seems like it understands the T1000 keyboard, which is useful to me.

    Full source is available.

  6. So, to get the 8086 version of the Aurora text editor, unzip auror30c.zip, then unzip aur86_30c.zip on top of it.

Run a86. This is an installer and compiler to build the editor for your machine. This takes a long time on an 8088....

    After installing, run a.exe....

And discover it just hangs forever on a Tandy 1000. 😭

I was hoping to show off another text editor but I guess not...

  7. Want to know what a serial port retro sound card sounds like?

  8. New video: TND232 Tandy Serial Port Soundcard

The Tandy 1000 and IBM PC Jr utilized the cheap Texas Instriuments SN76489 programmable sound generator. While it never caught on as a sound standard outside of these machines, many DOS games from the 1980s still supported this chip. What if you wanted to listen to video game music using the original chip, no emulation, but you had only a serial or USB port?

  9. 🕹️ Tandy 1000 EX vs Amiga 500

  10. Ok, finally finished backups of the pi3.

Filled up a 32 gig thumb drive! So much stuff!

Final step: backup of Tandy 1000 in progress.

I'm giving #EtherDFS a workout here. Exporting a directory of a fat32 thumb drive directly to the Tandy and the Tandy is making and writing zips to it!

  11. Aha!

I'm running pc-compatible Deskmate 3.05 on my Tandy 1000 and I've always been confused about the lack of a 3-voice chip sound player when the #TVDog Deskmate archive at oldskool.org has a bunch of music files...

    According to nerdlypleasures.blogspot.com/2
This is because generic DM 3 doesn't include the sound player, I need to grab it from DM 3.02 for the TL/SL!

  12. In the Editor Wars front, I figured out how to make IBM E3 do word wrap.

  13. @mherbert
Runs fine on my Tandy 1000SX!!

    good, fast, excellent keyboard control.

Doesn't exit properly, gotta 3 finger salute to get out?..

  14. I just stumbled upon this upgrade I would have leapt at a few years back when I was building up my "new" Tandy 1000HX:

    Tandy 1000 EX/HX 3-in-1 V2 Adapter --- 640K RAM + 2x Serial + Parallel + XTIDE Upgrade by Rob Krenicki

    ebay.com/itm/197473626636

It looks like the creator of this device, who posted the project to GitHub, has made his last production run, sadly. Several are available still on eBay.

It doesn't look like the RAM expansion has the DMA chip, but that really doesn't much matter. What a great unit. I upgraded my own 1000HX to this spec -- but did it the Hard way (note the capital H).

  15. TIL...
I always thought the light pen port on the Tandy 1000 was for a barcode scanner like the Model 100, but it's not! It's actually for a light pen (imagine a mouse you held up to the screen to use.)

  16. AtariSoft Battlezone booter on Tandy1000

I don't think it's tandy /pcjr compatible, it seems to corrupt itself...

Or it's a copy protection thing...

  17. So, #RetroComputer peeps!

Yesterday I was playing 2600 #BattleZone and it's one of my favorite games. And I started wondering, is there a good Battlezone for #Tandy1000 ?

(Yes I grabbed the Atarisoft booter posted to archive.org yesterday I'm looking for something that can live on a hard drive and maybe has Tandy graphics and uses the 3 voice chip)

  18. Weird Text editors on #Tandy1000

First we have a real antique! IBM's Personal E editor for the PC! This runs on MSDos 1 and came on a single sided disk! It still runs fine, but doesn't understand fancy dos features like directories... Also to insert a new line you have to press F9! 🤗

Second, the much newer IBM E version 3 for dos! Still nice and fast on the 1000. Apparently known as "E3", this, or a later version, was included with PCDos and another fork of E was the standard OS/2 editor.
