I just found pristine KryoFlux streams for the 5.25inch 360K Blockout diskette and thus upgraded my personal library, as well as this entry on the Internet Archive. Blockout is a true icon of 80s retro gaming!

30 years after the only time i saw one, today i'm re-united with a treasure of my childhood: a Datatrain 272A amber monochrome monitor
datatrain was a canadian monitor company back in the 80s and early 90s, that, afaik never made it outside of the country. i've only ever seen datatrain monitors used in two places: banks and grocery store checkouts. they were invariably monochrome (MDA) and almost always amber or green phosphors - although they did sell white variants.
these are, in fact, rebadged and redesigned Amdek monitors. the rear of the monitor reads "Datatrain: A Division of Roland DG Canada".... (!) I had not realized roland (the synth company) had bought Amdek/Datatrain back in the day. wild.
one thing i've never seen mentioned is that the phosphors used in "amber" monitors varies *widely* between manufacturers. this is a very warm blood-orange monitor, compared to the canary yellow used in my 6-inch Hyperion monitor.
if you've never seen a monochrome monitor in-person, here are a few phenomenological details i'm surprised by:
- the picture is warm, crisp, and *bright*. the camera is cutting out so much out of the contrast by design, so you're seeing what amounts to a washed-out image.
- i was expecting the usual CRT whine/hum and/or degaussing gong at startup. it is dead silent
- there's no static on the front of the glass! i'm used to brushing my fingertips along and feeling snappy static electricity, and this is completely static-free
- it's easy on the eyes, in a way that CRTs rarely are. i'm not sure if it's the specific phosphor used, or relatively low radiation, but it's so comfy to start at
- til the Tandy 1000 TL/2 can auto-boot in monochrome mode by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Shift-V at POST! there's a helpful sticker on the back of the machine with instructions.
also: til my Tandy 1000 TL/2's little Western Digital MFM drive seems to have died :\ it's not booting at all, so i'm reduced to using the built-in-ROM DeskMate shell which is kinda cute

Back to #Infocom #TextAdventure land, or more accurately Graphics adventures. I've been working with Stefan Vogt @8bitgames to support his latest and most ambitious project yet - Arcturus. The idea is that with a single set of image files that work with your adventure game, you can convert the images and generated #zmachine game to run on a range of #8bit #retrocomputing systems (and modern systems) that support the new custom extension.
Under the code name #Canopus, I have been working with him I have been able to integrate new image display code into the interpreter, granting the #TRS80 Model 4 (or 4P) with a hi-res card an immersive adventure experience previously unavailable on this platform. The current codebase requires 128k of RAM, which may be reduced once this implementation has settled. The code is also designed to work with either the #Tandy or the Microlabs graphics card.
It's a work in progress, so here's some screenshots on the trs80gp emulator to give an idea. Future #retrogaming with a #z80

Ok experts, I have not one but two TRS-80 Model 4 systems that display this. I have cleaned and adjusted the brightness/contrast knobs, and replaced the power supplies on both with brand new modern drop in ones. I have tried booting to Model 3 mode with no luck though can see the pattern change like it's not getting a sync.
Looking for suggestions, thanks! ❤️

back in the day 12v was mostly for disk motors, audio amps and serial
if ur only running modern flash media a lot of need for 12v goes away
and a trick i'm discovering is you may not actually need 12v for the audio amp, it might limit the maximum volume but jumper 5v over and we indeed get a beep out it 🫡
...well now i need a damn PC XT keyboard 😩
