The Space Cat (Nnedi Okorafor; art by Tana Ford) is the second children's book in this category. Periwinkle is a cat who belongs to Nnedi Okorafor and her daughter Anyaugo. Periwinkle is also a space cat, whose father is from Neptune and who has a secret lair where he keeps a spaceship and most nights he flies off into space to race an orange cat who keeps showing up. Then Okorafor's family moves to Nigeria for a year, where cats are viewed unfavorably (they're supposed to be cursed and to throw the evil eye at you). There are new animals for Periwinkle to meet, and an alien hazard to confront.
I think a number of pet owners invent an internal life and backstory for their pets. I certainly do: my cat Duncan had a history degree, and our dog Aurora would settle into her crate to work on her novel when my spouse and I were out. This book is a detailed story like that, with fun child-friendly adventures and lively illustrations. I love the early splash page of young Periwinkle leaving a streak of destruction through their house before he settles in. Does the ending set up a sequel, hmmm?

The lovely, talented, and phenomenal Tana Ford finally joined us in the fourth chair. Plans began in October and considering how 2022 was going we all decided to kick 2023 off in style and have her on the first episode of the year.
It was great. Seriously, one of the best we've done.
We talked Laguardia, The Space Cat, Dungeons & Dragons, Rick and Morty, Duck, Silk, whiskeys, and a whole mess more!
