My react native ui/design library journey:

NativeBase -> Tamagui -> twrnc

NativeBase was very noticeable, and the app was very sluggish.

Tamagui helped but you could still tell it was a non-native app.

twrnc + hermes brought native performance to Loops without complicated theme overhead, allowing me to reuse tailwind classes across web + apps.

While the new Pixelfed mobile app won't support themes, it will have light/dark/system modes!

Tailwind has the best DX, bringing this to react-native has made UI dev so much better.

Pixelfed is now on its 3rd major UI rewrite, and I'm borrowing a lot of experience from my twrnc usage on the new Loops app 😎

I do recognise that the @buttercup mobile app needs work - it’s clunky and has some issues - but it’s a huge amount of work to maintain, and even more to maintain it well (as it deserves). I don’t have time to keep all the apps up to date and in a state that I’d like while still building out the platform that I want.

After the browser extension update is out I plan to work on the self hosted and cloud solutions. If someone would be interested in rebuilding the mobile app with a new UI framework, or even just building a mock app in react native, I’d be super keen to hear from you! Looking to do it with Tamagui.

Today I got to launch a React Native app with major help from @zachmiles. It’s amazing that I could do this in under six months despite no React, JavaScript or really any development experience.

When I tell people that I think LLMs can change the way we think about how technology is built a big part of it is who is now able to build technology.

Building an iOS app that I dreamed up in my brain has been a bucket list item for many years. Feels amazing to check it off. #Tamagui

Any love for #Tamagui on the Fediverse? I’m new to #ReactNative but have been cutting my teeth on #NextJS for a bit and Tamagui’s Solito-powered monorepo is about the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.
