  1. As Ken delves deeper into computer-assisted mapmaking with tools like #TaleSpire and #Incarnate, he's finding he needs something the old one-button crowd on the Mac never dreamed off:

    A three-button mouse (with a scroll wheel).

Recommendations for a Mac-friendly multi-button mouse? He's open to having even more than three buttons though that seems ... excessive.

For a frame of reference ... this is Ken's current mouse: An ancient (and USB corded) Microsoft Intellimouse circa ... 2010?

  6. There's also #TaleSpire , which is great AND has Cyberpunk assets but has considerable overhead in building maps. reddit.com/r/talespire/comment

  7. Worldbuilding vs Session Prep

I keep my session prep loose and short. The most time is spent building maps in #Talespire
Everything else is just a set of bulletpoints/notes.

Worldbuilding... that's in depth. That's a mission. But continuous worldbuilding is why I'm able to keep my session prep so loose. If the unexpected happens I can just grab something from my world document and make new story threads!

It works for me. Might not for everyone else though!

  8. Our group is currently contemplating switching from R20 to Talespire.

The graphics are *gorgeous* and while it may not have as many options as other VTTs, we've pretty much only used R20 for combat, so nothing would be lost there.

I especially the feeling of height and depth. You really get a feeling for how epic these environments are.

  9. @kingu Depends. If we need something lightweight, #OwlbearRodeo. For something meatier, where rule support is helpful (eg #CyberpunkRED) and the maps are largely 2D, the #Roll20. For sessions that benefit from three dimensions, #TaleSpire.

Most of our Lair communications happen on #Discord (coordination sessions, game updates, funny posts). We also use Discord for voice and video during games.

  10. Bad news on the TUPE front has led me to drown my sorrows in a quite literal manner, as I create an underwater scene using the #Talespire tabletop mapping program. This is probably the only thing of value I will do today...

  11. One of the games I'm going to run in 2023 is ALIEN. While I'd like to run it in the real world, it could be fun to try it online.

There are a bunch of fan-created slabs for #TaleSpire recreating locations from the boxed-set adventures

  12. Back to #TaleSpire as I prep for our Easy Mode playtest tomorrow night.

  13. Ok, choombas. We've got walls and a floor. No ceiling. No doors. No windows but the day is still young. #CyberpunkRED #TaleSpire

  14. Umm ... why does the "Image to Plane" mod for #TaleSpire inverting my maps horizontally and vertically?

  15. Heading back into #TaleSpire for my second attempt at building out maps for #CyberpunkRED Easy Mode.

The first time around, the 40x40 px grid was too small; TaleSpire's wall thickness (which can't be configured) overwhelmed the buildings. This time, I'm trying a 80x80 px grid.

  16. The holidays are coming. Doom looms for many role-playing game campaigns. How can you keep your group going during this festive (but super busy) time of year? Check out Episode 7 of Season 3 for our strategies. lairofsecrets.com/podcast/s3e7

  17. Alright, #TaleSpire progress! Map imported and mostly lined up with the grid. The challenge now is ... assumptions of the #CyberpunkRED map and of #TaleSpire are different.

Specifically, the #EasyMode map (seen as the underlay for my slab) assumes you'll have thin walls.

The #SciFi / #Cyberpunk assets for TaleSpire, however, assume the walls are much thicker. The end result are rooms that are 50% wall.

  18. This has been a fun day of yak shaving side quests for #TaleSpire I say this un-sarcastically, because I really am having fun on this rainy #Sunday, sitting around in my pajamas & hockey jersey, playing with new tools.

It's not something I've had much time or energy for recently.

  19. Trying to figure out if I can import a flat 2D map into #TaleSpire so I can use it to build up my slab (the slab in question being one of two battle maps for the #CyberpunkRED #EasyMode one-shot.

  20. @LightHiker After that short digression, I can get down to my primary quest: recreating the #CyberpunkRED #EasyMode maps in #TaleSpire.

  21. @LightHiker Yeah, that would have been my take as well, save for the fact it didn't work like that :) I was able to get things where I want them by going into #TaleSpire > Game Settings and enabling Windowed Mode.

When I did that, I could move it to the "primary" display, then switch back to full screen mode and it stayed put. Now when I launch the game, it loads on what I consider the primary.

  22. Learning #TaleSpire. Or getting ready to learn TaleSpire. First, I'm figuring out how to get it to load on what I've designated in Windows as my primary monitor.

My home set up is an iMac booting into Windows 10, with the desktop extended to an Apple Cinema display (the later of which I want to use as my primary).

While Half Life 2 happily loads on the Cinema Display, TaleSpire loads on the iMac display.

  23. Those that play digitally, what tools could you not live without?

What tools would you like to use more?

Personally, I run my games on #FoundryVTT using #Guilded for comms.

I've been experimenting with 3d mapping in Foundry with the 3DCanvas plug in but I''m not quite there yet.
I'm also looking into #Talespire but the tile-based mapping makes maps very square.
