Finished with Tales of Destiny. Great game, and I hope Bandai Namco remasters it with an official localization. (I have my doubts, though, considering that interlacing is baked into the graphics engine and they would probably need to remake it from scratch.) Combat is probably the best of a 2D Tales game, but it still has some bullshit moments where I'd find my party members just constantly dying and I'd have no idea why.

I love how much of a doofus Stahn is in this.
The PS1 original suffered from a pretty rushed localization with stilted dialog, so it's nice to see the characters more personable here.

The upgrade from the 16-bit-style chibi sprites of the PS1 version is amazing. I think the PS2 era was the pinnacle of pixel art.
One thing I noticed that I thought was pretty clever: the characters' weapons are 3D polygonal models. This way, the weapon changes when you swap equipment, but they don't have to make new animations for each one.

I'm impressed at how much of an improvement Tales of Destiny DC is over Tales of Rebirth. The combat and exploration are both vastly improved. It's a shame the Tales of Destiny 2 translation project seems to have been abandoned; I would have liked to experience the two together.

Finished with Tales of Rebirth. Glad I was finally able to experience it, but I have no desire to ever play it again. The random encounter rate and awful AI just kills it, and the combat only gets decent at the end of the game after doing the terrible side quests and minigames and tons of grinding. I'm not going to bother with the bonus dungeon, since it requires playing through the game a second time to complete.

I'm glad they made discoveries better in Graces and Zestiria, because there ain't no fucking way anyone could ever possibly find more than like 4 of them in Rebirth without a guide.

I can see why Namco skipped Tales of Rebirth for a western release. Sure, it sucks we missed out on the context of these characters in subsequent cameos, but I'm really struggling to enjoy it.
So far, I think Legendia is a better 2D Tales game, and of course Abyss is one of the best JRPGs on PS2.
