The argument is straightforward: AI fails the basic test of sustainable competitive advantage because it's neither unique nor inimitable. Capital, talent, algorithms, even proprietary data, all of it is converging. Smaller models are catching up to larger ones. Open-source is closing the gap. The moat you think you're building is filling in as fast as you dig.

    The part that should sting for most executives is this: the companies that win won't win because of AI. They'll win because of what their people do with it that nobody else thought to do.

    That means that it isn't what AI tools you're buying. It's whether you're still investing in the humans who know your customers, your market, and your blind spots well enough to make a move no model would predict.

    If you gutted your talent development budget to fund AI infrastructure, you may have traded the thing that can't be commoditized for the thing that already is.

    The big point I got was around managing expectations on both sides - particularly for interns, they've often got other things going on in their lives. So getting some understanding of that, against what their team needs from them.

  24. i had a great time at our local Bay Area D-Com developer conference, talking to attendees on cloud security

    it was great to see familiar faces and new ones, but my highlight was the shy developer who near the end hesitated to talk to me, but after a bit of encouragement came over. She works with us as a developer but came to us from a smaller company where she performed many different security roles

    As we were getting near drinks, there wasn't enough time to cover what we wanted discuss, but I offered my time for a meeting at a later date, and I don't think she could have looked more delighted and surprised.

    Nothing is more rewarding than looking into the eyes of bright young people and see the spark of possibilities they didn't consider available before!

    I don't think she quite realizes she might be doing me the bigger favor... 😅​
