I rely a great deal on Japanese folklore, urban legends, and creepypasta. My WIP is inspired by "The Peony Lantern," the big antag 3rd and 3th volume is Takiyashi-hime rebranded as Takiyashi-tenno.

Take out the folk bits, and all that would be left is a love story.,

Character Sketch 1 Takiyasha-tenno

#Ash was falling as Takiyasha-tenno looked out over her city. As ash neared her familiar, embers woke along their paper-thin edges. The Empress studied the winking lights. If a portent lay there, she kept silent.

“What of Sakura-hime’s consorts?” She asked. Simple language in bass tones was best with the frog.

“Approach unsafe forest,” she heard in her head. “Food?”

The thrush Takiyasha set free flew toward the open window.

Flit. The familiar’s tongue caught it mid-flight. “Warm. Good. More?”

The Empress ignored the request, instead signaling an attendant who resumed brushing her long hair using a fine ash-wood comb.

Note: It’s not much of a story, but this one way I develop characters. I write short non-canon stories and let them reveal facets of the character before I use them in canon stories. Already, I know I need to go back and change a section of my main story where Takiyasha communicates with the frog familiar, and I have firmed up how the familiar speaks, something I already suspected.

Takiyasha-tenno forget that not everyone does what she tells them to. She recognized they may scheme, for that is the way of the world. But to open disobedience is unthinkable.

Since this antagonistic POV not mine most of my antagonistic are unsuitable. They could never understand the question. So we go with Takiyasha-tenno.

Peregrine Falcon. Regal, long sighted, merciless, an ultimate predator. Yes I think that suits me.

Mikawa-san is an antag. This my normal mod. Antag not villain.

Takiyasha-tenno and Kawakami-senseiare villians.

I tend to like antags that don't have human agenda's. i.e. they can't be villians because human morality has nothing to do with them. Evil is human construct.

Takiyasha-tenno: A 1000-year-old empress assumes someone lower on the pecking order would do such things. She only executes those who fail to perform their duties unseen and silently.

Neither of my chief antags thinks in those kinds of terms. This is too human for Mikawa and for Takiyasha-tenno, having existed over a 1,000 years, there is little new for her to experience.

#WritersCoffeeClub 11. How does your setting contribute to the conflict in your work? Part 2

The direct influence on conflict:

Most characters in #Yuri Japan are normal individuals without special powers. Many non-Yuri stories feature OP characters, mine are UP (underpowered), they depend on alliance or favors from more powerful entities. On another level, it means that "conflict," and I use the term loosely, revolves around romance, romance adjacent, and intimacy issues. They remain primary while the supernatural plot is secondary.

Kakuyo shapes the kind of creatures and situations they face. The effects of terror and the aftermath are reflective of this background. The use of Shinto and Buddhist clerical magic is also derived from this.

The Heian court determines the objective and tactics of this set of creatures. It also sets up a verbal conflict where the character, unused to the prevalence of metaphor, poems, and indirect speech, must try to understand what is going on.

#Yuri Japan shapes how my characters interact. It is the mundane setting.

Kakuyo is a setting of a mix of creepypasta, urban legend, and Japanese mythology, it shapes the kind of creatures my characters have to deal with.

The #Heian court influences a sub-class of those creatures with court etiquette, poetry, and metaphoric speech playing a huge dialog role as well as how those characters interpret the world. I am fortunately not bound to 100% accuracy because it is a shadow court that has persisted in Kakuryo since the Masakado rebellion. (mid 10th century)

All three influence the story.

Mikawa sounds like a rusty wind. Words are slurred, especially "S'. She can seem beguiling, reasonable when it serves her purpose, but normally is just vicious.

Takiyasha-tenno speaks in long, indirect courtly sentences laced with quotes and poetry. Some exchanges are made solely in katauta 5/7/7 verse. She will make some allowances when dealing with less sophisticated foreigners.

#WordWeavers 4. Describe something unusual/interesting about one of your characters’ looks or style.

Mikawa-san has no feet.

Takiysha-tenno wears a frog green 12 layer kimono which layer being lighter in color till it is a light cream in the center. Her hair hair is so long it spills out onto the floor when she sites in curling piles. Her face is powered white and her teeth stained black (It was the style not something weird and creepy.) - An illustration is planned but not commissioned yet. (No quires need.)

Mikawa: Same way she'd handle someone complimenting her. Kill them

Takiyasha-tenno: No one criticises a 1000-year-old Empress/Sorceress. No one is that foolish. Actuall the first one on the list did:

Her Majesty, the Empress, responded:

          Sparrow has flown
          Sparrow hawk weeping
          A useless bird
          The kodoku arena
          Cockfight crowing

Note: That's not good.
