I was looking at the current state of Fediverse servers, alternatives to Mastodon, and discovered that Takahē was quietly abandoned over 2 years ago. Bummer.

Takahē have been described as having the size of a goose and the speed of a racehorse - they can't fly, but they sure can flee. They were believed to be extinct for about half a century, but are now classed as endangered (pop. c.500).

@andrew just heard about #Takahe server from some MastoAdmins as I am building @admin with a look to creating multiple instances for each political jurisdiction I approach -> starting with federal gov in Australia.

ohh thats a hard one! I am quite fond of #Takahē (https://jointakahe.org) cause it lets each user account have its own domain name, so you can host one server but then each account "acts" like a single user instance to the rest of the fedi. And @dimkr's Tootik (https://github.com/dimkr/tootik) is also pretty amazing, it lets you post from inside a Gemini capsule and a bunch of other crazy features.

For 50 years, experts thought it had gone the way of the dodo. But in 1948 a tiny population of flightless takahē was rediscovered living in one of the most remote corners of New Zealand’s frigid South Island.

It sparked a decades-long program to venture into their tussock grassland habitat and collect eggs to breed up their numbers.

I'm honestly *very* surprised that there really doesn't seem to be an actively developed #Python server project on here, beyond #Takahe which seems to lost in a sargasso sea of community non-engagement, a class of problem that I have long since learned I will probably not be the one to solve, ever.

I don't know whether that says something about Python itself or the Python community or what.

Part of our vision for continuing development of Takahē - under the creator's mentorship - is implementing as many different publishing protocols as we can. Including ATProto and Nostr. Although receiving and replying to comments from them all may be more challenging.

Like PeerTube, we also want to support common variants of RSS, of which there seem to be at least 4. See the list on channel pages, exposed when you click on the RSS symbol next to;

I am interested in building a Slack-like interface with a list of hashtags/topics being pinned to the sidebar. if not Mastodon, would have to pick a different server.
