High-profile attorney quits 2 Trump cases as 'year of legal uncertainty' begins
Attorney Joseph Tacopina has been representing former President Donald Trump in two separate cases: a criminal prosecution by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr. and an appeal of the verdict in former Elle columnist E. Jean Carroll's first civil defamation case.
But according to the New York Times' Maggie Haberman, Tacopina has withdrawn from both cases.
"His departure from the two cases comes as Mr. Trump enters a year of legal uncertainty," Haberman reports in an article published on Monday, January 15. "He faces four criminal indictments, and trials with dates that are up in the air. The trial in Manhattan, in which he is accused of falsifying business records to hide hush-money payments to a porn star during the 2016 election, could begin as early as March."

#Tacopina has successfully completed his representation of #Trump without obviously putting his law license in jeopardy. That's a rare accomplishment for Trump's attorneys.
For his sake, I hope Tacopina was smart enough to get full payment up front, because based upon Trump's track record with lawyers, he's unlikely to see another penny from him.

It is never a good look to get shot down by multiple objections in your closing argument, but somehow Tacopina managed to do just that in his closing in the Carroll v. Trump case. That is definitely not the last impression you want to give to the jury.

Trump's lawyers really are special, aren't they? Asking for a mistrial because you beclowned yourself in front of the jury is a fantastic way of pissing off the Court. It is not going to result in a well-respective and smart judge like Kaplan granting you a mistrial.
This reeks of playing a case to the client rather than to the jury. That is a very good way of losing a case.

I would bet that #tacopina got one order from #trump regarding the cross-examination of #JeanCarroll. That would be “make her cry”. He didn’t succeed. Trump makes a big deal out of tears and I bet he was positively salivating over posting on social media about it if she did. She disappointed him, I’m sure.

Judge #Kaplan has admonished #Tacopina several times. At one point, he told Tacopina, “Look, you get to make a closing argument, & this isn’t the time for it.”
Kaplan also instructed Tacopina to rephrase some questions to better elicit clear answers. Kaplan’s interjection prompted Tacopina to walk away exasperated.
Trump's atty's comments continue to frustrate Kaplan. “Come on, Mr. Tacopina,” he said, & repeated that his questions were “argumentative.”
