  1. Scenes from the Tablelands, site of the world's oldest above-ground rocks. This is a piece of the earth's mantle. ~650,000,000 years old. #newfoundland #Tablelands #geology #RockOn #NaturePhotography #hiking

  2. Today’s adventures led us to the #Tablelands and #TroutRiver in #Newfoundland. The hike was a pretty nice one being about 4KM return trip. Spending some time in Trout River was also nice.
Tomorrow we have a long journey driving. 3 hours then a ferry ride

  3. Check out this post by Melissa Rice on how the Perseverance rover science team was torn with competing priorities: sealing up the "Green Gardens" sample as quickly as possible vs continuing to the next important science stop, "Broom Point".

  4. "#Tablelands [in western Newfoundland] are not just similar to #Mars in looks. Morrill has found bacteria living in the local stream's high pH currents as a result of natural process called serpentinization."

"Morrill said it's possible serpentinization also happens on Mars, so she's researching what the #Tablelands can reveal about finding past or current life on the Red Planet."

  5. A lovely view from a trail on the #Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park, #Newfoundland that I'd completely forgotten about because it's been almost 12 years since my visit. Look at all those layers of mountains! I really need to go back.

  6. The #Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park in #Newfoundland is basically the Earth's mantle that was thrust up as ancient continents collided hundreds of millions years ago, resulting in a barren, orange landscape. I had some issues with my knees so we only hiked the shortest trail we could find. This was the view from the end of the trail.
