  4. What a pleasure my #TablasCreek #InstagramLive conversation with #OwenBargreen was this week. We talked about how he balances a full-time career as a clinical psychologist with the demands of producing hundreds of tasting reports and thousands of wine notes each year, what stories he likes to tell and why he doesn't publish negative reviews, and took a deep dive into his recent report on the 2020, 21 & 22 vintages in Paso Robles.

  7. I'm so excited about my #TablasCreek #InstagramLive guest this week. Tegan Passalacqua -- winemaker at #TurleyWines and owner of #Sandlands -- is someone whose wines I love, whose approach to farming is outstanding, and whose thoughtfulness means that I still think about things I heard him say while sitting on a panel with him a decade ago. Join us tomorrow at noon on the Tablas Instagram feed!

  8. I'm super excited for my #TablasCreek #InstagramLive conversation this week. Melissa Saunders MW represents #CommunalBrands, an incredible portfolio of eco-conscious wineries, while also leading the charge for fine wine in alternative packaging.

Is it possible to make a real difference on the import side of the wine trade? Melissa is evidence that the answer is yes!

  9. The conversation was great. We dove into the implications of the coolest September in our history, Neil shared what new blocks and grapes he’s particularly excited to explore, and why a long, slow ripening cycle is great… until it isn’t. 10. Our second week of #harvest2023 at #TablasCreek is in the books! The fruit is rolling in at a slow and steady pace, mostly from vineyards from warmer parts of #PasoRobles for our Patelin program. Here on our harvest chalkboard, green chalk is Patelin, and purple chalk is from our estate. The cumulative tonnage so far is 76.62. Not a bad start as we work towards 400+ tons for the year.

For a 👀 👀 👀 comparison, check out the second photo and note where we were in harvest at this date last year!

  11. If you missed my conversation yesterday with Morgen McLaughlin of #WillametteValleyWineryAssociation, it was great. We discussed how her roots on her family’s Connecticut winery (one of the state’s first) convinced her of the importance of communal marketing, the different challenges of representing regions with diversity vs those with focus, and the exciting announcement from
#Revino about #OregonWine's new reusable bottle. It's on the #TablasCreek IG feed and also at vimeo.com/866867369

  12. I'm so looking forward to my #TablasCreek #InstagramLive conversation this week! Morgen McLaughlin has overseen regions as varied as the Finger Lakes, Santa Barbara, and now the Willamette Valley, and she's involved in a cool new reusable bottle plan for Oregon Wine. Join us tomorrow at noon Pacific on the Tablas #Instagram feed!

  13. And we’re off! With the first two lots, including this #Viognier, from Austin Collins’s viewpoint on the forklift, we’re excited to welcome the #2023harvest at #TablasCreek. One day down, roughly 70 more to go.

  14. I love the textures in this #photo: #mourvedre #grapes, coloring up nicely; shaggy brown #vines; green #leaves showing the first signs of autumn colors. The #2023harvest hasn't started yet at #TablasCreek, but it's imminent.

  15. I'm so looking forward to my #TablasCreek #InstagramLive conversation with Clive Pursehouse today. He's US Editor for #Decanter, in charge of dramatically increasing their coverage here, plus he writes for #PelotonMagazine and #SwitchbackMagazine and spent nearly two decades working for #UniversityOfWashington. Join us at noon on the Tablas Creek Instagram feed!

  16. I'm so looking forward to my #TablasCreek #InstagramLive guest this week. Equalitas provides standards and certification covering environmental, social, and economic pillars, and is a model for how to build a broad coalition around meaningful sustainability goals.

  17. It may be late, but harvest is still approaching. The best sign: we’ve seen the first signs of #veraison. Not out at #TablasCreek where things are still green, green, green, but at our home vineyard, source of the Full Circle Pinot Noir. This typically marks six weeks until harvest, which puts us at mid-September: nearly a month later than last year’s, which came in on August 18th.

  18. I'm very much looking forward to my guest for this week's #TablasCreek #InstagramLive conversation. I'll be speaking with Sarah Doyle, wine, beer, and spirits writer for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Little known fact: Tablas Creek was a part of Sarah's journey, with a stint here back in 2007!

See you in about a half hour (noon PT) on the Tablas Instagram.

  19. What a fun #TablasCreek #InstagramLive conversation I had this week with #ARENIGlobal’s Pauline Vicard! We talked about the biggest challenges (think climate change and neo-prohibitionism) and opportunities (rising interest in #wine each generation and unbelievable diversity) as well as how we find the same welcoming character in the wine and ultimate frisbee communities. If you missed it, it’s available in the Tablas Creek Vimeo archive: vimeo.com/845011607

  20. I'm quoted in a terrific front-page article in today's SLO Tribune: “The great thing about wine is that all of the things that we’re doing to help make more resilient soils and pull carbon out of the atmosphere and use less water ... make better wine.”

  25. At #TablasCreek we get scam emails all the time. I'm sure we're not alone, or that there's anything unique about the #wine #business that makes us more prone to scams. And most are transparently fake. But every now and then we get one that has a new wrinkle. In this week's #blog post, I share a recent scam email, break down what makes it potentially powerful, and dive into how to spot new scams. #FraudPrevention #ScamEmails #CaveatVenditor tablascreek.typepad.com/tablas

  26. I've been seeing headlines about #winery traffic being down sharply this year. But they mostly overlook that Q1 of 2023 was unusually cold and wet. At #TablasCreek we had 20 rainy days in March, and only 1 weekend day that was not raining and over 60F. Headlines were all about #floods and #BombCyclones and evacuation warnings. It's a wonder our traffic was only off 22%! Traffic is up vs. 2022 since April 1st.

I dove into it in a new blog. tablascreek.typepad.com/tablas

  27. Such a hopeful time of year. At #TablasCreek our #budbreak is 3-4 weeks later than the average of the last decade after our lovely wet, frosty winter. But now the sun is out, temps in the 70s, and it’s go time.

For a deep dive into how this compares to recent years and a bunch more pictures, check out this week’s #TablasBlog.

  28. Portrait of #TablasCreek spring 2023: head-trained, dry-farmed #Mourvedre vine, still dormant after the spring #equinox. Ground saturated after all our rain. #CoverCrops lush and green. #SolarPanels working away in the background.

  29. In a new #TablasCreek blog I dive into how the storms we've gotten this winter have changed the landscape. Most interestingly, they've revealed the harder #limestone layers that run like veins through the softer #calcareous clay. This spillway from our reservoir is a great example of how the water chews through the softer layers until it reaches a limestone shelf. (And, I think, a super cool #photo!)

  30. I have a legend joining me for this week’s #TablasCreek #InstagramLive conversation. Karen MacNeil is the publisher of The Wine Bible, founder and editor of WineSpeed, and inspiration to a generation of writers, somms, #wine educators and consumers. Join us Wednesday at noon Pacific on the Tablas Creek Instagram channel!

  31. One year ago at #TablasCreek we released our first-ever box of #wine: the Patelin de Tablas Rosé. I was hoping it would go fast and in my best-case scenario we'd sell out in a week. We sold out in 4 hours and I got to spend the next week replying to disappointed customers. So this year we made about 3x as many boxes.

Looks like maybe I underestimated. We released the new vintage this morning and have already sold 60% of the total we made. Bonkers.

  32. I'm super excited for my #TablasCreek #InstagramLive conversation today. #MichaelDorf is a legend in the music world as founder of #TheKnittingFactory, and his work in bringing the winemaking experience to city audiences through the various #CityWinery locations has been huge. Plus (in a timely tie-in) he's probably sold more #kegs of #wine than anyone else. Join us today at noon Pacific on the Tablas Instagram feed!

  33. I would hope that people who follow me or the work we do at
#TablasCreek know that I believe the wine world can and should do better at moving to #organic (and better) farming. That notwithstanding, I agree with every point @wblakegray makes in his newest piece.

  34. Glass is a problematic container for #wine due to its weight, the energy you need to mine, mold, and ship it, and the fact that glass #recycling in the United States is dismal. At #TablasCreek we've moved to lightweight bottles, shifted some of our production to box and keg, and worked to source more locally and with a higher recycled content. I'm still excited that we'll be serving our #TastingRoom wines going forward out of keg, not bottle.

  35. Walked all over #TablasCreek today. This is the creek itself, looking placid and bucolic. A big change from two weeks ago!

The #vineyard was still plenty wet, with springs bubbling out everywhere. I’m feeling good about where we are going into the #2023Vintage.

  36. For the next #grape in the #GrapeMinute series we’ve been recording at #TablasCreek, I dive into one of our non-Rhone varieties: #Tannat!

This famously tannic, ageworthy grape originated in the #Basque country and has become the national grape of Uruguay. It’s also growing in popularity in California. Here’s one minute with all the essentials to get you up to speed.

  37. We have a new entry in our #GrapeMinute series at #TablasCreek. Today we released the video on one of our more obscure varieties, #TerretNoir! In one minute, I walk through its grape's history, how it grows in the vineyard, and what we like about it in the cellar.

If you'd like a deeper dive on this fascinating grape, we have that too, on our website: tablascreek.com/story/vineyard

  38. What a pleasure it was to speak to #WineandSpirits' Josh Greene today for my #TablasCreek Instagram Live. I always appreciate Josh's thoughtful approach to #wine... and loved what he had to say about the value (and risk) of tasting blind. If you missed it, it's archived at instagram.com/p/ClmWoRvBPLx/

  39. One of the fun things I've been doing for #tablascreek this year has been a series we're calling #grapeminute: one minute videos covering the history, viticulture, winemaking, and flavor profiles of the different Rhone grape varieties. We just posted a new one, on one of my favorites: Grenache Blanc.
