W sieci zawrzało po informacjach o zmianach w regulaminach T-Mobile. Nagłówki krzyczą o „historycznych zmianach” i „bezużytecznych przyciskach do papieru”. Prawda jest dużo bardziej prozaiczna. Wyjaśniamy to rzetelnie.
Jeśli rzucił Ci się na oczy tego typu nagłówek i twoim pierwszym odruchem była chęć sprawdzenia, czy twój iPhone lub flagowiec z Androidem w sieci T-Mobile nagle przestanie dzwonić – odetchnij głęboko. Nic takiego się nie wydarzy.
Oto co tak naprawdę wynika z nowych zapisów operatora i dlaczego nie musisz biec do salonu po nowy telefon.
O co tyle szumu? (konkretne daty)
T-Mobile po prostu porządkuje papiery. W nowych regulaminach pojawił się zapis, że operator gwarantuje utrzymanie technologii 2G do 31 grudnia 2027 roku. Dopiero od 1 stycznia 2028 roku zastrzega sobie prawo do stopniowego ograniczania tego pasma.
Wniosek? Masz co najmniej półtora roku świętego spokoju, a proces wygaszania potrwa pewnie kolejne kilka lat. To nie jest „pstryczek”, który wyłączy nadajniki w całym kraju w sylwestrową noc. Ale jeszcze jeszcze jedna kwestia, która powinna uspokoić każdego nietechnicznego Czytelnika.
Dlaczego T-Mobile (i inni) wyłączają stare pasma?
To nie jest złośliwość korporacji, a techniczna konieczność nazywana refarmingiem. Radiowe pasmo transmisyjne (zakres częstotliwości) dla sieci komórkowych jest ograniczone. Starsze technologie, takie właśnie jak 2G wykorzystują je nieoptymalnie. Mamy tu do czynienia po prostu z marnotrawstwem miejsca w eterze.
Pasma, na których działa 2G (głównie 900 MHz), są bardzo cenne, bo mają świetny zasięg i dobrze przenikają przez ściany. Na tym samym „kawałku” częstotliwości, gdzie 2G ledwo zipie z rozmowami i SMS-ami, technologia LTE lub 5G może obsłużyć dziesięciokrotnie więcej użytkowników i przesyłać dane z prędkością większą o rzędy wielkości. Mówiąc obrazowo, operatorzy po prostu wyrzucają „starą meblościankę”, żeby wstawić tam nowoczesne i wydajne regały.
Kogo ta rozciągnięta w czasie zmiana faktycznie zaboli?
Nie oszukujmy się – dla 99% czytelników iMagazine ta zmiana jest całkowicie bez znaczenia. Każdy smartfon kupiony w ciągu ostatnich 5-7 lat wspiera technologię VoLTE (rozmowy przez 4G/LTE), która przejęła rolę 2G i 3G.
Prawdziwy problem mogą mieć dwie grupy:
- Seniorzy z „cegłami”: osoby mocno przywiązane do bardzo starych telefonów klawiszowych, które nie obsługują 4G. Te faktycznie mogą za kilka lat przestać dzwonić.
- Systemy maszynowe (M2M): stare alarmy, sterowniki bram, windy czy lokalizatory GPS w samochodach, które korzystają z modułów 2G. Tu wymiana sprzętu może być konieczna, ale firmy mają na to blisko dwa lata. Ważne jest też to, że taka wymiana jest w olbrzymiej większości przypadków wykonalna.
Co musisz zrobić dzisiaj?
Absolutnie nic. Jeśli twój telefon wyświetla przy ikonie zasięgu „LTE”, „4G” lub „5G” podczas rozmowy – jesteś bezpieczny. T-Mobile (podobnie jak wcześniej z 3G) będzie prowadzić kampanie informacyjne na długo przed realnym wyłączeniem nadajników w Twojej okolicy.
Zamiast więc panikować nad sensacyjnymi newsami, potraktuj to jako naturalny etap ewolucji. 2G to technologia z lat 90. ubiegłego wieku – czas pozwolić jej odejść na zasłużoną emeryturę, by zrobić miejsce dla standardów, które nie łapią zadyszki przy wysyłaniu zdjęcia na Signal.

@ct_Magazin Allein nach den ersten 2 Sätzen sollte man dem Herrn zeigen wo die Tür ist. Der lügt sobald er mehr als Guten Tag sagt. Gegen die US Gesetzgebung ist keiner der Big Tech Konzerne immun sondern der Handlanger und Erfüllungsgehilfe.
Damit sind die TECH CEO auch fein, immerhin kriechen sie seit Nov. 24 vor Trump auf dem Boden und küssen ihm die Füße.

A staffer with Public Knowledge e-mailed me a few weeks ago to ask if I would be willing to sign a letter supporting the Internet Archive’s efforts to preserve the history of the Web and possibly provide a quote about how I’d used the Archive. Having repeatedly relied on the Archive’s Wayback Machine to link back to my own past published work, I said I would be happy to do that–having already donated $100 to that San Francisco non-profit in January.

I had the dumb luck to see this change firsthand on a flight from Denver to San Jose Tuesday, then needed the rest of that day to get some responses from T-Mobile and United. The airline’s switch to free Starlink connectivity will fix this problem, but we are months away from that rollout reaching a significant fraction of United’s mainline fleet.

4/19/2026: Blue Origin Rocket Launches, Then Loses AST SpaceMobile BlueBird Satellite, PCMag
I watched the third launch of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket on my phone as I was walking up to the security checkpoint at Dulles early Sunday morning, started writing up what I thought was a successful launch, then learned–via painfully slow inflight WiFi–that New Glenn’s second stage had failed to deliver AST’s mobile-broadband BlueBird satellite to the intended orbit. This is a real black eye for Blue that should outweigh its achievement in reflying a New Glenn booster and then landing it on a barge in the Atlantic.

Anybody using 5G for their home internet? My girlfriend has terribly slow and horribly over-priced AT&T but it doesn't look like she has any other wired option...
She can get T-Mobile 5G home internet here (I'd probably do it through my Mint Mobile account, slightly cheaper), and even the minimum advertised download bandwidth would be 10x (yes, 10x) what she currently has, and it would be SO much more inexpensive.
I assume you run into some congestion at times? How does it work, I assume it's like a bunch of 5G cell phones in a box? 😆
I'd prefer something wired but looks like there's just no other option in her apartment complex.

All this talk of a #LinuxPhone is wonderful. But it's going to be a long time before I can buy a phone from #TMobile or #BoostMobile that has #Phosh or #KDEMobile on it, and only takes a few steps to setup. So it would be nice to go to a phone store and get a #NothingPhone or a #JollaPhone like that. But it's not happening any time soon.

Anyone got any pointers for setting up #VisualVoicemail on #Android #AOSP or #LineageOS-derived dialers with #MintMobile, or #TMobile or other T-mobile #MVNOs?
I called the number, set up my PIN and greeting, but I just keep getting "Can't activate visual voicemail" in the dialer, even after going to Voicemail in the settings, turning off Visual voicemail, and turning it on again.
When I was on AT&T, it would occasionally be able to fetch the VMs, but often fail. I'm hoping it might work better with Mint/Tmo. XD
I'm on #IodéOS (based on Lineage).

Oh how disgusting, T-Mobile is testing an NVIDIA TX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPU attached to one of their cell towers to create something called, "Physical AI". They are also working with Nokia on attempting to execute this nightmare...Apparently, it's supposed to supercharge LLM systems, by increasing responsiveness and make them generally faster at performing tasks.
I really don't see the appeal because it would allow this malignant tumor given birth to by Silicon Valley and Peter Thiel's machinations access to critical infrastructure. Which is honestly terrifying, giving how bad LLMs are at doing basically everything, save for compromising anonymity of people online.
Once I pay off my device, I will be calling it quits with T-Mobile because I want no part of a company messing with shit like this.
