I've finished: The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher
Well, that's it I've finished T. Kingfisher's audiobook catalogue up to 11.2025.
I kept The Hollow Places in reserve because it was the most horror coded of her novels, and while it is full of horror and creepiness, it also has Kingfishers human touch. Softening the hard edges with humor and self reflection.
Trust Kingfisher to write horror that I can thoroughly enjoy.

I've finished: The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher
Well, that's it I've finished T. Kingfisher's audiobook catalogue up to 11.2025.
I kept The Hollow Places in reserve because it was the most horror coded of her novels, and while it is full of horror and creepiness, it also has Kingfishers human touch. Softening the hard edges with humor and self reflection.
Trust Kingfisher to write horror that I can thoroughly enjoy.

Ultimele pagini ale verii lui ’25
Salutare, entuziaști ai cuvintelor! A îngălbenit frunza din vii, iar toamna se apropie cu pași străvezii. Ce să mai, e deja aici, doar că nu mai are aceeași putere pe care mi-o amintesc din vremea copilăriei. Ori vara se răsfață, ori i-a schimbat harta toamnei, astfel că săraca nu mai știe calea. Oricum, oamenii continuă să se bucure de ultimele raze ale soarelui și încet-încet, se pregătesc de lunile mai puțin călduroase. Eu una deja mi-am stabilit lista de lectură (pe care iar nu o voi respecta, ha!), și aștept cu entuziasm să aud frunzele trosnindu-mi pe sub picioare în timp ce mă îndrept spre parc. Poate în această toamnă reușesc să citesc mai mult afară, pe băncuță.
Pe locuri, fiți gata,… am terminat!Oricum, astăzi nu este despre visul meu de toamnă, ci despre ultimele pagini ale verii. Luna trecută, au apărut pe Instagram tot felul de provocări de lectură pentru ultimele zile din vară și m-am hotărât să particip și eu la una dintre ele. Nu prea mi-a ieșit, dar până la urmă, tot am reușit să bifez câteva titluri de pe listă. Ba mai mult, mi-am atins până și ținta stabilită de lectură pentru anul acesta! Ce surpriză!
Dar ca să n-o mai întind așa, hai să vă povestesc despre ce am mai citit luna trecută!
Mi-am început luna cu o carte ieșită de sub penița Agathei Christie: „Crima din Mesopotamia”. Provocarea lansată de asociație dicta ca pentru luna iulie să explorăm o poveste în care sunt prezenți arheologi. Cum am citit deja „Moarte printre nori” în urmă cu mai mulți ani, atenția mi s-a oprit asupra acestui roman. Agatha este o maestră, știm cu toții asta, iar Hercule Poirot nu-și pierde șarmul nici de această dată. Detectivului îi place să bârfească și să pregătească scena pentru mare revelație cu meticulozitate. În felul lui, este un arheolog de primă clasă, reușind să dezgroape artefactele fiecărei nelegiuiri în parte prin conversație și activitatea propriilor celule cenușii. Mi-a plăcut foarte mult modul în care autoarea a construit acțiunea, relatând totul din perspectiva unui martor ocular.
Am terminat cartea cu zâmbetul pe buze și un gol în minte: eu ce mai citesc acum?, deși trei turnuri înalte de un metru mă judecau din colțul camerei. Și pe care credeți că am ales-o în continuare? Ei bine, pe niciuna! M-am învârtit pe diverse pagini de internet și am ajuns iar pe Netgalley, de unde am obținut două titluri.
Trebuie să citesc mai mult despre Tibet.Primul a fost „The Path of Dalai Lama” (în traducere „Calea lui Dalai Lama”), un roman grafic scurt care urmărește viața și învățăturile celui de-al paisprezecelea Dalai Lama. Tom Taylor, alături de Matyáš Namai ne poartă pașii prin Tibet, unde ne este prezentată viața pașnică a oamenilor, alături de câteva aspecte culturale specifice vieții de dinaintea ocupației comuniste.
Fiecare pagină a fost viu colorată, aducând în prim-plan o paletă de culori evocatoare atât pentru vechiul stil tibetan, cât și pentru viața din timpul războiului. În principiu, mi-a plăcut, însă au existat câteva momente de fricțiune între stilul narativ și logică. Am avut impresia că autorii au uitat de unde au pornit, efectuând o tranziție bruscă de la o narațiune realizată la persoana a treia singular la persoana întâi singular și utilizând o voce narativă destul de puerilă.
După o vreme, m-am întors la o carte de non-ficțiune, „Manualul Limbajului Trupului”, scrisă de Allan și Barbara Pease, pe care am început să o citesc în urmă cu un an-doi, dacă îmi amintesc bine. Deși limbajul utilizat este simplist și presărat cu tot felul de exemple, mi-a fost greu să o termin pentru că mintea mea avea nevoie de acțiune. Așa că am făcut o pauză la scurt timp după ce am găsit în cutia poștală electronică o confirmare din partea unei edituri internaționale.
În sfârșit, am descoperit și eu echivalentul în limba engleză pentru „cucută”.Am auzit pentru prima dată despre T. Kingfisher de la Carri, o cititoare stabilită în Coreea de Sud. Am devenit curioasă și mi-am pus în minte să citesc măcar o carte scrisă de această autoare. Ei bine, iată că Tor mi-a îndeplinit dorința în momentul în care mi-a transmis un exemplar al cărții „Hemlock and Silver” (în traducere „Cucută și argint”). După cum vă puteți imagina, am fost foarte entuziasmată să mă apuc de lectură, deși după vreo cincizeci-șaizeci de pagini, entuziasmul meu a început a se dezumfla.
Am pornit de la ideea că autoarea ne va spune un alt fel de poveste a Albei ca Zăpada, însă până am ajuns la castel și am reușit să o descoperim pe fată, a durat peste cincizeci de file. Personajul principal, Anja, vorbește prea mult și nu acționează suficient. În majoritatea timpului își aduce aminte de modul în care a început să se joace cu otrăvurile sau își face griji cu privire la modul de interacțiune cu regele văduvit. Abia atunci când descoperă o pisică vorbitoare încep lucrurile să se miște. Mi-ar fi plăcut ca lumea oglinzilor și a merelor otrăvite să fi fost explorată mai mult, ca să nu mai vorbesc despre potențialul ratat al poveștii reginei malefice. Totul a fost rezumat în câteva pagini, iar misterul s-a disipat rapid. Am scris mai multe pe Instagram.
Și iată că am ajuns la ultimul titlu citit în luna august: „iLove”, scris de Naomi Gibson. L-am văzut la un moment dat pe Elefant și evident că nu l-am cumpărat. Apoi, am trecut prin Cărturești unde l-am întâlnit iar. L-am ridicat de pe raft, l-am analizat, apoi mi-a atras atenția sintagma „inteligența artificială”. Noroc că am citit ce scria pe spatele coperții, altfel ar fi durat o eternitate (sau mai mult) să ajung la această poveste. De ce? Ați ghicit: nici coperta și nici titlul tradus în limba română nu mi-au atras atenția. Originalul arăta mai bine: „Every Line of You”.
Ca și în cazul romanului precedent, și aici aș putea vorbi fără încetare despre ce putea fi făcut mai bine, deși notele acordate sunt diferite. Acestui titlu i-am acordat 5/5 steluțe pentru că a reușit să mă țină în priză prin acțiune. De această dată întâlnim o adolescentă de 17 ani, foarte pricepută la sistemele digitale, dovadă că în urmă cu trei ani a început să lucreze la propriul sistem de inteligență artificială. Lucrurile iau o turnură mai întunecată după ce Servciile Secrete îl descoperă însă pe Henry, LLM-ul obsedat de spargeri și de creatorul său.
Lăsați-vă amprenta!
Așa se încheie vara mea. Sunt curioasă, totuși, să vă citesc gândurile despre oricare dintre aceste titluri, în cazul în care v-a trecut vreunul prin mâini. Dacă nu, care sunt poveștile alături de care v-ați delectat vara aceasta? Ce lecturi interesante v-au colorat ultimele zile ale verii?

It looks like I forgot to write a diary entry for WHAT FEASTS AT NIGHT by T. Kingfisher, so I won't give much of a plot summary. It's a sequel to WHAT MOVES THE DEAD. The same protagonist, retired soldier Alex Easton, goes to a family hunting lodge and learns the caretaker has died. Easton has again stumbled into a haunting by a supernatural creature, and again creepy dreams ensue. I've really enjoyed this duology; apparently a third book is on the way.

A SORCERESS COMES TO CALL, by T. Kingfisher, is an enjoyably sinister fantasy spin on a Regency (or maybe it's Victorian?) novel that's all about marriages and estates and social status. Cordelia's mother Evangeline is a sorceress, one who's able to control another person's body and therefore keeps Cordelia firmly under her thumb. Her mother has decided it's time to find a new husband, and has set her sights on Samuel, a prosperous merchant who's a bachelor. Samuel's sister Hester can spot trouble arriving, though, and is resolved to prevent the marriage.
Cordelia's mother is self-centered and utterly hateful, so you really want Hester and Cordelia to prevail, but Evangeline has magical skills and is holding all the cards, so how do they win? It wasn't really Hugo-worthy for me, but was a fun page-turner.
