Some time ago I came upon someone asking what would be a good introduction to the Arthurian cycle and the matter of Britain, and the replies mentioned that this book would be a good one that covered “most of it”.Dear Reader, if you have been here me for a while you’ll know I am deeply lazy and love “most of it” works, so this piqued my interest.

Part 5 of #THWhite 's quintet of Arthurian novellas is an oddity: the publisher baulked at releasing the collection, partly due to wartime paper rationing, so White raided it for its best 20 pages and stuck them in the 1st book! What remains, published posthumously, is uneven: moments of the sublime, moments of laugh out loud ridiculousness, but too much of Merlyn lecturing out White's political beliefs. #Bookstodon @bookstodon

T.H. White was writing stories for an era that wasn't here yet. There are scenes in Sword in the Stone that would lend themselves handily to a modern fan Wikipedia treatment.
Of Madame Mim's cottage: "The Wart caught a hurried glimpse of her parlor and kitchen. The lace curtains, the aspidistra, the lithograph called the Virgin's Choice, the printed text of the Lord's Prayer written backwards and hung upside-down, the sea-shell, the needle-case in the shape of a heart with A Present from Camelot written on it, the broom sticks, the cauldrons, and the bottles of dandelion wine."
There's a lot going on here.

Watch, quietly
The most difficult thing in the world is to know how to do a thing and to watch somebody else doing it wrong, without comment.
