I got confused when reading The Law of Requisite Variety and this definition: “To solve a complex problem, the approach needs to have the same complexity.”
Then I read all kinds of interesting-sounding interpretations.
Just read a chapter on Cybernetics, which states: explanations such as [the one above] is not what was intended by Ashby (1958). 😳
So, now I am reading some chapters from Ashby. 😬

The Semantic Irony of SAFe - a thread 🧵
There is a profound irony in the name "SAFe" (Scaled Agile Framework). In a truly agile system, the first thing you have to accept is that nothing is safe. Agility is our response to uncertainty, complexity, and risk.

We need to talk about the cult of "staying current."
I often see teams pushing for major framework or library upgrades without being able to name a single friction point, security risk, or performance bottleneck they are actually solving. When asked for the "Why," the answer is usually a shrug: "It’s the latest version."

At what point does automation stop being an advantage and start exposing your system's deepest flaws?
Right now, we are obsessed with "efficiency" in the wrong places. We automate reports, summaries, and dashboards, thinking we are accelerating our work.
But we might just be making our stagnation more visible.

I learned the hard way that words can be weapons.
(No trauma dump, you're good.)Language is powerful.
Or as I like to say:
Language is load-bearing.Words have real somatic impact.
They change nervous system state.
And yet tech treats it as.. vibes.
(Words make the body go brrr.)What happens when language is treated with the same rigor as code?
When nervous system cost is not an abstract idea but part of the equation?
Which communicational failure modes become myths of the past?
(Static types for human language when?)Imagine people asking:
"Why do you care about language so much?"And the answer being:
"Because it works."systemic.engineering explores what happens
when language stops being vibes
and is treated as infrastructure.Because that's what language is:
The transport layer between divergent realities.
(Be they human or agentic.)Intruiged?

“We already have feedback.”
That’s often where learning stops. Most orgs don’t lack feedback — they lack the ability to act on it. Surveys, metrics, incidents… and no change.
Feedback is only feedback if it changes the next piece of work. If change is slow, risky, or expensive, systems ignore signals.
Feedback problems are work problems.
Work–Feedback Loop:
Learning speed = response speed. -
I collected my results and reflections on #AdventOfSystemSeeing 2025 on a page on my blog: https://sebastian-hans.de/blog/aiss-2025/
Most of this has already been posted here, but I have added a PDF version of my zine “Advent(ure) in System Seeing 2025”, so you can print it, too, if you like.

🥳✨ "Magical Systems 🧙♂️ Thinking" is just a fancy way of saying "Oops, we forgot systems aren't magical, they fight back." 🤯🤡 Apparently, complex systems aren't as simple as they look—who knew?! Maybe Viktor Zhdanov can save us from this conceptual quagmire, but only if we remember who he is. 😅🚰📡

After my accident, I leaned on AI. Not because it understood, but because it explained.
But support can become dependence.
And if the system we lean on is closed, opaque, or unaccountable, we may not realise the leg is hollow until it gives way.New post:

"AI will make us faster!" 🤖🚀 Yay? 🤔 Or... are we building defects faster & creating fragile systems that collapse under pressure? Focusing only on speed is a trap. Check out this take: https://agilepainrelief.com/blog/speed-trap-how-the-obsession-with-speed-is-build-a-fragile-organizations/

I’m Not Searching for Myself. I’m Designing Myself.
You don’t “find” yourself. You build.Every day I lay one more layer. A principle. A rhythm. A discipline. I don’t wait for clarity — I construct it. Like a building. Like a codebase. My identity is not an accident. It’s a system.
There’s freedom in construction. Because it’s conscious. It’s yours. And when it’s yours — it’s unshakable.

A good reminder from @ewisniowski
"As coaches and business professionals, we should look at the people and systems we set up instead of looking for messengers to shoot and people to hold accountable"

Sorry, I didn't notice your question 🙂
Mechanism is akin to tactics, "if this do that", drill, knee-jerk reaction, technology.
Strategic thinking is about contemplating the lay of the land. Understanding and designing applicable cause-and-effect chains, resilience against things that we don't know, being an actor that researches what to want. In the political it's strategy "all the way down". In order to avoid an infinite regress one has to embrace complexity -> #Systemthinking

Heading home from a talk by Masoud Chelongar who spoke about "Accelerating Software Transformation: The Synergy of Domain-Driven Design and Systems Thinking".
He provided insights how systems thinking, team topologies and DDD fit together. It was interesting to hear all three ideas in one talk. And it was the second time in a month someone recommended @diana book on system thinking, but this time also a workshop from her was positively emphasized. #softwaredevelopment #systemthinking

Leverage points to intervene in a system
2. Mindset or paradigm that the system — its goals, structure, rules, delays, parameters — arises from
Paradigms might be changed by pointing out anomalies/failures in the current paradigm to open minds. -
Leverage points to intervene in a system
3. Goal of the system
Changing goals changes every item listed above: parameters, feedback loops, information and self-organization. -
Leverage points to intervene in a system
4. Power to add, change, evolve, or self-organize system structure
Ability to change by creating new structures, adding new negative & positive feedback loops, promoting information flows, making rules. -

-
Leverage points to intervene in a system
5. Rules of the system (such as incentives, punishment, constraints)
Pay attention to rules, and to who makes them. -
Leverage points to intervene in a system
6. Structure of information flow (who does and does not have access to what kinds of information)
It is cheaper and easier to change information flows than it is to change structure.
