Not even reading "between" the lines, but simply... reading the lines. Waterfox is in deep trouble.
The dev is stating clearly on Reddit (for months now) that they've been in the red, financially speaking, for quite some time.
Their new inbuilt adblocker (based on Brave's implementation) is yes partially to have something inbuilt, but also so they can (by default) let ads through on their default search provider.
And now Waterfox has been dropped by Startpage (due to Startpage losing rather than making money on Waterfox users) and Waterfox has had to (as an interim solution hopefully) adopt 1.org as their default search provider. 1.org, which is a "charitable" search engine, but which is opaque on what search index it uses, is owned by the adtech company System1, and which states in their privacy policy that they collect data and share it with various advertising networks and social media networks.

#Startpage wurde ursprünglich in den Niederlanden gegründet und war ein europäischer Suchdienst. 2019 hat jedoch das US-Unternehmen #System1 eine Mehrheitsbeteiligung an Startpage übernommen.
Offiziell bleibt Startpage unter der niederländischen Firma Surfboard Holding B.V. registriert und behauptet, den europäischen #Datenschutz (DSGVO) einzuhalten. Aber da System1 ein US-Unternehmen ist, gibt es Bedenken, ob US-Behörden indirekten Zugriff haben könnten.
Tipp wer bedenken hat nutzt ecosia ist aus Deutschland ⭐ oder Qwant aus Frankreich

Das ist leider kurzfristig die bequeme Lösung, die dementsprechend von sehr vielen angestrebt wird. Wir machen die Augen zu und drängen alle aus unserem Wahrnehmungsbereich, die sich trotzdem bemerkbar machen möchten...
Dass das nicht mehr klappt und erst Recht nicht dauerhaft funktionieren kann, ist eigentlich logisch, aber #System1 unseres Gehirns ist einfach so viel schneller und dominanter. Außerdem ist das eigene Wohl ja die oberste Prämisse im #Humanismus geworden

#System1 (owners of #Startpage and formerly Waterfox) and #Skiff are two examples of this: Marketing, corporate, venture capital stuff profiting off of people's need for privacy. They'll give you your privacy, but they're still taking your data which, even in aggregate, is extremely valuable to people who want to maintain their iron grip on the world.

For some time now, I've been unhappy with the direction #Mozilla has been taking with #Firefox, but I still believe it's the lesser of evils even among the same family
