  3. The 7 Best Wines to Pair With Steak to Buy in 2026

Published on February 26, 2026 Michele Chiarlo, Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Spotswoode When we ask friends what wine they would pair with a steak, their obvious answer is red. But what might not be as obvious is that not all red wines pair perfectly with steak. There’s a bit of basi…

  4. This fine Lisboa region Reserva is modeled on the N. Rhone, a Syrah with a tiny dollop of Viognier. This was a big vintage and it's held beautifully, handling the alcohol (14.5%) & big fruit perfectly. There's a beefy nose, a hint of game and what I'd call graceful maturity, giving it nuance & finesse to go with depth. There's plenty of flavor too. It is surprisingly bright & fresh with grip on the finish still, more gorgeous with air. About $40-ish in new vintages

  5. 2/2, the conclusion

Power remains, and the nuanced fruit is no slouch. This easily holds up to much more expensive wines, a great performance at this age, better the next day. Needs food! 12.5% alc, at least on the label.

  6. Dense ruby red with intense purplish tints. An aromatic, spicy bouquet of pepper, cinnamon and cloves, enhanced by hints of cocoa and chocolate. On the palate, a powerful, round, structured and tannic attack. A well-balanced wine, powerful, fine and complex, with interesting potential.

  7. 20th anniversary of this...call it a holiday wine. Perfect for grilling.

Probably not intended to be a 20-year, but here we are. It's doing great, good years left. Juicy on the finish, there's still some grip too, plus pepper and a lot of that Syrah game. It's a fine performance with freshness for those who like Syrah with depth and character. Delicious, especially a little cool. 14.5%. Only $35 back then.

Inaugural bottle opened with my new Le Creuset screwpull. :) #wine #mendocino #syrah

  8. Big Boy Syrah! 15.8%, warm year (2003), but it has some merits--big meaty flavors with a blueberry-vanilla tinge, rich fruit and some backbone. But also, a too-sweet edge I didn't much like, a one-dimensional fruit-bomb style I wouldn't buy these days.

This 2003 held decently. It could use drinking, but it hasn't cracked much, if at all. Age is not the big issue. Then, $50s, now over $100. #syrah #ednavalley #wine

  9. Our morning pick of Berghold Vineyards Syrah looking very good. We've got a solid hardworking crew this year. Here they fill thick cardboard shipping boxes right in the vineyard used to ship to wineries throughout the country. In this case our client requested whole clusters. We also crush or press. The boxes are lined with a thick plastic bag then sealed. A lid is strapped on then it's into our chiller to get ready for a refrigerated truck. The white plastic tube is used to keep space open in the center for dry ice to jump start the cooling.

  11. A great example of a girdle on the main axis of the rachis causing bunch stem necrosis - the berries at the far end of the cluster have not been able to develop normally because all phloem flow has been cut off - therefore, no sugar can enter the berries. Before the girdle the berries ripen normally.

Depending on when this happens, there can be a detrimental effect on wine, because the berries have low sugar/high acid.

  12. First crop Syrah, planted 2022. Hand picked, about a half tonne from one hectare.

First pick of 2024 for our domaine!

  13. Old soldier hero shot of a 2009 Trader Joe's Costal Syrah on a hot afternoon. You'd be right to say it was past its best, as can be seen by the brown cast to the ruby red, but wrong also. It sherried. It's got the wonder of an old port mixed with the smooth fullness of the varietal. I'd decanted the remainder before I realized I could have had a small glass at a later date. Now I'm just going to have to enjoy a little slice of heaven longer, now. 😋 Who moved my cheese?
