This is move-in week at the American university, and I keep thinking about the freshmen. They were born in 2008, most of them, into the autumn the economy fell through the floor. Their parents signed leases in August and watched the banks fail in September, and a fair number of the classmates who should have been hauling suitcases up the dormitory stairs beside them do not exist. American births peaked in 2007, sagged with the crash, and never came back. The recession officially ended in 2009. We were kinda adorable, even in the midst of an amount of misery. Absolutely kicking myself that when we got together for our 40th anniversary a couple of years ago, we didn't recreate this photo.

These methods are just gone (while letterpress lives on). I made my living at #pasteup for several years. This one, though, definitely evokes the loneliness of crossing the campus on a winter evening. Short handheld with Tri-X 400. There's dust on the negative but I'm not fixing these in post.

A night shot in the eternal snow of a #Syracuse winter, 1978. A taxicab pulling up to a freshman dorm at #SyracuseUniversity at Christmas break. Always a weird lonely feeling as the campus emptied out (I was often one of the last to leave).
Looking at this, I remember thinking taxis to the bus station (or airport) were definitely for other students. It was a long walk but the taxi ride would have cost a good part of the price of my bus ticket home. #photography #OldPhotographs #BWPhoto -

Jon Bosak's images from his college days keep setting me in a nostalgic mood.
What hits me most are some of the details that reveal once-ubiquitous items that are now almost entirely gone from the world, like wax paper cups.
So I was leafing through my old photos and here's one of the first that jumped out at me: a Coke-branded waxed paper cup.
I'm sure I thought this was artistic in 1978.
