Gununununu... This is like how my old manager would call VGA a "serial port." Normies who used computers before USB/HDMI are terrifying.

I imagine the reason I don't see people calling HDMI USB these days is because I don't work helpdesk anymore.

The Syquest Part 1. 27 years ago, I shut down this 1994 Syquest and its 88MB cartridge for the last time. It stayed in a box all this time, until I recently decided to plug it into the Power G4 I acquired a few months ago.
For that, I bought an Adaptec SCSI 2930 card and the appropriate cable... But when I plug the Syquest into the Mac and boot, I get a gray screen with the mouse cursor... nothing happens until I shut down the Syquest, and then the Mac boots up normally. It seems I need a SCSI terminator... to be continued...

Keiner? Dann kommen die Dinger erstmal wieder ins Lager, bis ich mich meinem #Amiga 2000 widme, da will ich nämlich ein #SyQuest-Laufwerk als Festplatten-Ersatz drin haben. Wird aber noch dauern, bis ich zu dem komme.

Hat jemand zufällig eine 44 MB oder 88 MB #SyQuest Cartridge rumliegen und würde mir die überlassen? Hab hier drei Laufwerke, die ich gerne testen würde, aber keine Medien dafür. Und da ich nicht weiß, ob auch nur eines der Laufwerke überhaupt funktioniert, will ich da nicht extra was für kaufen...

Но, как оказалось, для некоторых носителей есть исключения. Более того, существовали не просто негерметичные HDD, а такие, для которых извлечение блинов и повторная их установка были штатной операцией. Как же такое было возможно? Давайте разбираться. I opened the #SyQuest drive and cartridge to see if it was dirty. Much to my surprise, both were quite clean inside.

The cartridge had a very obvious defect in the surface on one side. Maybe these cartridges are just bad.

Let me know if you have a SyQuest drive or some cartridges you want to jettison for science!

I’ve moved the #SyQuest drive to my trusty PowerMac 8500. I was curious to test if the driver on the disk was PPC only for some reason and this crashed my SE/30. Anytime I try to mount the disk is when problems occur.

Well, the same is true here. SCSIProbe sees it but crashes when I try to mount it.

От перфокарт в облако. Где вы хранили файлы десятилетие назад?

В годы моей бурной юности в ходу были пятидюймовые дискеты. Их и вправду можно было назвать “floppy”, то есть, гибкими — футляр из плотного коленкора довольно легко сгибался, пробивался степлером и даже с некоторым усилием сворачивался в трубку. Перфокарты я тоже застал — родители иногда приносили их домой из вычислительного центра, в котором работали, и маленький я рисовал на этих забавных карточках с напечатанными типографским способом рядами цифр (и совой, сова с надписью «КАНГАС» почему-то накрепко засела в памяти) короткими фломастерами от плоттеров-графопостроителей, которые в ассортименте добывались там же, в ВЦ. Сейчас, используя многогигабайтовое облако, смешно вспоминать эту бумажную карточку емкостью 80 байт. Зато можно сказать, что эволюцию носителей информации от перфокарт к облаку я увидел собственными глазами.

I'm always posting stuff about our puppers Zelda, so I figured I'd drop one of some of my old computer hardware that's kinda neat. This is a Syquest 3.5" 270MB removable cartridge drive from 1994! It's got a SCSI interface on the back, and built in power supply. It still works flawlessly, although at SCSI1 speeds, but ya know what, it's really fun to use and be able to store things on, even if just for novelty sake!

@echobit @untergrund_ffm Oh Mann, ZIP war der Himmel nach diesen grauenhaften #SyQuest Blech-Scheiben. Ich habe immer noch den Radau im Ohr: „SCHLACK-siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing—SCHLACK-siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing—SCHLACK-siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing…“ — und wieder DM 100,— im Eimer (für 44 MB!!!!!). ZIP mit 100 MB für DM 25,— war schon eher im Studenten-Budget (bin glücklicherweise vom „click-of-death“ nie betroffen gewesen, glaube das war bei den SCSI-Modellen auch seltener).
