"Over the past three years Blake has conducted 56 collections of synthetic turf in the waterway alongside the KP Hardiman Reserve hockey pitch.
" 'I noticed that a local hockey pitch was being replaced and the plastic surface was running off into the local environment,' he says. Strong northerly winds and #LeafBlowers had helped shed the turf fragments into the local #environment.
"In addition to impacts on #AquaticEcosystems, scientific analysis suggests #PlasticPollution is exacerbating #ClimateChange, #biodiversity loss and #OceanAcidification.
"Australians produce more than 3m tonnes of plastic waste each year, and according to Clean Up’s annual survey of parks, beaches, creeks and other public spaces, plastics make up more than 80% of litter across the country. A review by the New South Wales chief scientist found that one #SyntheticTurf field could transport between 10kg and 100kg of plastic fragments into the #stormwater system or local waterways.
"Blake has taken advantage of the electronic scales provided by the newly opened community science laboratory in the Port Phillip #EcoCentre in #StKilda, to quantify his samples to present to the local council and the Environment Protection Authority. The lab hosts facilities including microscopes, measuring equipment, safety gear and access to advice from trained scientists.
"It’s one example of citizen scientists tackling the growing problem of plastics in #waterways, including #beaches, #rivers and dive sites around the country."

At 2.20pm yesterday I was Just passing a local grass soccer oval on the way home.
What should be the heat health policy for children (teen girls) playing soccer in 35C+ heat? Anyone?
When I got home, I did some reading: Sports Medicine Aus says Soccer is a category 3 sport for extreme heat health risks. The girls were playing in 35.8C ambient temperature, 22% humidity as I measured. That places them into moderate #heathealth risk approaching high risk.
I have no idea if more frequent breaks, or drink stoppages were being implemented which are risk mitigation measures at moderate level.
I am only glad this wasn’t on #syntheticturf which would amplify the heat health risks. Synthetic Turf can reach spot temperatures up to 80C in direct sunlight posing a direct health stress risk to playing on the surface.
The Sports Medicine Australia document says near the end :
“currently unclear if heat stress risk is truly elevated in children”

Just finished reading this Review article in the Royal Society of Chemistry Journal on Airborne Microplastics by Lopez et al: Atmospheric microplastics: exposure, toxicity, and detrimental health effects. (March 2023)
My interest comes from rollout of artificial turf which is listed as one outside environmental source for airborne MPs.
Airborne MPs is an active research area that raises many more questions for future research, especially on environmental and human health impacts. Meanwhile, we should be employing the precautionary principle before adding new primary sources for Microplastic Particles.

"Recent independent testing of multiple artificial fields has found the presence of highly toxic PFAS compounds like 6:2 FTOH and PFOS. The EPA recently revised its health advisory for PFOS to state that in effect no level of exposure to it in drinking water is safe."
Meanwhile here in Victoria, Australia, EPA Vic and Department of Health (Environment Services) declined to test synthetic turf when I asked them to in late 2022 highlighting potential health risk..

Synthetic grass tennis courts last about 5 years, have #Microplastics loss and end of life disposal issue. Writing a literature review on #syntheticturf in 2021 opened my eyes to the extent and depth of the #plasticscrisis problem and the issue of #microplastics, how it is part of the #fossilfuel product marketing contributing to the #climatecrisis.
