  1. How to Make a Mammal in Nine Evolutionary Steps smithsonianmag.com/science-nat by Riley Black

"#Paleontologists have known for decades that #mammals emerged from a broader, diverse group of creatures called #synapsids... Nevertheless, a big evolutionary gap exists between a very early, lizard-like synapsid and modern mammals like ourselves."

  2. Been a long week so let’s have a good #FossilFriday. Today some shots from my trip to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. The dinosaur wing is amazing and generally a great museum I wish I could have spent more time at.

  3. The most recent Common Descent podcast is a good summary of herbivores:
    commondescentpodcast.com/2023/
Includes overview of early feeding traces, first on algal mats, then on plants, and the theory that herbivory was rare in the oceans prior to the Cretaceous. Followed by a nice overview of early amniote herbivores, and then the evolution of herbivory in Coelurosauria and (mammalian)
    Carnivorans.

  4. This is actually the third time I've drawn #dimetrodon. First time was as a bonus to my Humans and our Cousins project ( sauropods.win/@Vickysaurus/109 ) It was one of the first times I ever drew #paleoart, and I wish I hadn't made it so scaly. The second time was a silly image that popped into my head when I read of an old hypothesis that sail-backed #synapsids used their sails to surf across the water. 'Surfin' synapsids' fits the rhythm of 'Surfin' USA' perfectly. It's joined by Edaphosaurus

  6. July: #Synapsids and #sauropsids through the ages. This one delicts the amniote common ancestor species splitting into two back in the Carboniferous. Each subsequent panel moves one period forward and shows a synapsid and a sauropsid interacting in some way. The sauropsid is always on the left and the synapsid is always on the right. #paleoart #evolution #MyArt

  7. March: #Moschops in love. Two female Moschops share a moment of affection by the shore. These friend-shaped #synapsids are thought to be semi-aquatic, and I tried to make them look the part. #paleoart #myArt #permian #therapsid
